Hi all, tricky one for me as never been interested/needed an SUV but now I’m building a house and require something bigger and more practical than my 4C.

Ideally something that’s sub £5k, auto a must so that the missus can drive it...she’s only just turning 25 so if there are any cheaper on insurance options that would be a consideration also.

So, something cheap, simple, reliable and can chuck a few bags of cement in the back. Any suggestions? I’ve almost ruled out anything Land Rover due reliability (despite family always having them). MPG not a huge factor as won’t be doing many miles.

£5k in SUV terms doesn't buy you anything new / modern.

I'd go japanese or korean. you'll find plenty of old shape Kia sportages, sorentos, Hyundai tucsons, santa fe's, terracon etc. Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4 and Nissan x-trail and terranos should show up too.
if going diesel stick to an older unit.

Our CRV is behaving itself,we have the mk3 im unsure if you'd get an auto for 5k. We had a Nissan Terrano in the past and it was a great workhorse until the thrust bearing went.
