I understand that M6 toll road, 13miles for £3, does not have a speed limit on it because its a private road. Is this correct? Its not in our area but my wife tells me last night it was virtually empty and cars were traveling quite quickly!

In our dreams. It's a normal motorway as far as limits are concerned (ie 70mph). Your wife may have witnessed cars driving fast, but police and no doubt scamerati do patrol and enforce the limit from time to time.

When they opened the road the speed limit was not enforcible because it was a private road.

About 2 weeks after it opened i was on my way back from manchester on a friday afternoon (eek!) so jumped on the toll road. There was no-one on it (practically!) so i did about 145mph (in my 328 cab) all the way to the end of the toll road.

I heard about 6 weeks later that the toll road owners had issued some sort of warrant to the police to say that the police could enforce normal road laws on this stretch of private road (tax, mot, speeding, etc).

Shame - it's a great surface and even the hairiest corners at fine at 145mph.

I've been on it about 6 times now, and although most of the traffic moves at 90-95, I would make sure you are not the fastest vehicle on the road. I have seen 3 people pulled over for speeding in those 6 times on it, and again last weekend, the bloke behind me got pulled over not long after the toll booth going north on the M6. How I didn't get pulled will be one of those pleasent little mysteries...

I've only travelled down the M6 toll road once. Beautiful surface and pretty quite too with a lot of traffic travelling in excess of 100....quite happy keeping up until I spy our friends, the boys in blue with a camera, monitoring traffic and informing a unit further down the road to pull em in

I Know of someone driving back from Warrington after collecting his 993 GT2 from 9M had 310kph showing on the speedo before a problem with over boosting set in and ended the fun.
Drag racing out of the Toll booths is the dogs b*****ks IMHO best £3 you can spend.

Yep. And have you seen how far the 30mph limit extends?

Cops have been known to enforce it - and its quite possible using brisk acceleration from the booth to be breaking the speed limit by 70mph.

Even the numpties break the speed limit by 40mph on exiting the tolls.

That's a lot of drivers with *no* licence for an afternoon's work one time...

Jeez, have the enforcers nothing better to do?

yes its sometimes vertualy empty and yes traffic moves at 80-90 or even faster if Im on it mu ha ha.

just a warning. I use it quite a lot and its crawling with cops. plenty of unmarked cars as well, including a black jaguar S type.

I go passed 3 entrances on the way to work (A5) and I am always seeong marked cars getting on and off.

I usualy find someone whos going 100ish in the outside lane then tag along on the inside lane

yes people still stay in the outside lane even when they are the only cars in sight.

agreed but I follow behind them at the same speed on the inside lane.

My thinking is that any police hiding on a slip road will go after them not me

Don't you believe it!!

Seen a couple of Police cars and a police bike on it, and a pull on a 997 northbound a few weeks ago.

Bl**dy good road though and a great diversion around the Brum bit of the dreaded M6......

I think the point being made is that the guy on the outside lane is more likely of getting a pull. Certainly have a higher chance of getting zapped by a laser, they generally sight it on the outside lane (for obvious reasons) might just give you that 2 seconds needed to scrub off the required amount of speed.
