Although I share a certain scorn for health fads, be assured that coeliac disease is no joke.

"Father, would it be OK to not have a wafer? It might make me ill".

"Sure, God is very forgiving".

Job done.

Surely god would magically make any allergen disappear from the wafer upon consumption - afterall he wouldn't want to make one of his loyal flock ill would he?

My o/h, who has coeliac, reckons that without the fads, there would be less stuff on offer for her. In the four years since she was diagnosed there has certainly been an increase in the size of the supermarket sections.
I'm sure she'll be glad to know the Church is on her side too.

Don't Catholics believe in transubstantiation? The wafer consists of the body of Christ.

This could represent a bigger problem for vegetarians than those who can't eat gluten.

genuine question, I’m not wanting to argue with anyone, just understand: I thought the wafer was literally the body of Christ* at point of ingestion - so how can there be a gluten free or glutinous variant? Or is it a wafer substrate infused with the body of Christ or something.

Other rhetorical thoughts: good on the church for doing this. I have to wonder how severely you’d need to be intolerant that such a small wafer would cause disastrous problems and wouldn’t it just be better to decline to take part in the activity? would God really mind if they didn’t eat the wafer? Seems a bit petty for a God to be happy that somebody took the time to physically worship him in a church but sufficiently unhappy that they didn’t ingest a bit of Christ or whatever.

  • i don’t know the difference between God, Christ and Jesus so I may have gotten this wrong.

Very much this. God bless the hypochondriacs and faddy eaters, for now we even have gluten free beer!

.
In days gone by, if your body rejected the gluten rich 'body of Christ' you'd probably have been burned at the stake, God is a lot more understanding these days it seems.

There is no need to participate in Communion to go to church. Indeed in most Anglican churches, if you haven't been both baptised and confirmed when you are older, then its considered bad form to participate in communion.

I was at my local watering hole the other day because my o/h had heard they had a gluten free beer on tap, from a brewery we know to look out for. It had gone, the pub man told me it was because people were put off by the 'gluten free' on the label and it wasn't selling!
Gluten free ale is not in any way different; IME g/f lager that can be easier to spot. I have done blind tests and the only g/f beer I can spot is the awful Speckled Hen, because it's just awful.

It's very unfair for my o/h, who used to drink beer all the time before she was diagnosed.

Same here. Fake coeliacs annoy her, but at the same time, are causing there to be more choice available for the real ones.

Only Catholics believe that the bread is the body of Christ and the wine [b]is[/i] the blood of Christ after the blessing. Yes, 30 odd years of attending means that I say "the body of Christ" rather than "Christ's body". I just realised this after I typed. Beelzebub is taking over.

It has taken over 24 hours but I have just realised it doesn't say water.
I was trying to work out how gluten free water was made.

Still, my dad always said it would make me go blind so I had better cut down.

Similar here. My missus has gone dairy free to help with dodgy guts. The choice now is amazing compared to a while ago.
