How would you sell your M car?
Discussion
Sale or return is dangerous ground. Too many stories of people getting ripped off.
I wouldn't say the market over £10k is dead in general. There's just too many cars that are just too overpriced at the moment especially M cars. There is a lot of supply of most M cars and a limited demand. Personally I can't see why value are so high.
Even with very limited supply cars like the Z4MC prices are still too high. It's not just the private market either. A few cars that look good, and are priced within the rest of the adverts, haven't sold in ages. Some cars have been on sale for over 2 years.
The advertised prices of these cars that aren't selling are still influencing people to the value of their car.
If it's a good car priced well it will sell.

Half the issue I found is the ‘investment’ excuse has driven both crap and good examples values up.
Apart from the odd car it’s hard to tell if you’re about to go see a shed or a nice car.
Doing full research takes hours (maybe 6+, then a visit and test and check all paperwork etc) and days, even if a car turns out to be a turd.
I’ve seen a few E46 M3 approaching a year for sale now, they’re clearly over priced, irrespective of being good or bad examples.
I’m flip flopping on an E46 or an E90, but keep erring to the E90 because all said the total cost is roughly the same for a newer lower mileage car that’ll be easier to buy.
I’d even say I’d go probably go private to avoid the dealer markup for basically nothing (as they all come from private sellers any way)... and no dealer at this age is trustworthy to mean you won’t buy on your own condition check any way.
I’d say price right, provide full honest details so buyers won’t just ignore it ‘just in case it’s a shed’, and be realistic on value, and your car will go instantly.

The last few cars I've sold its been autotrader that has produced the results. Have used the classified ad on ebay in the past and obv pistonheads....I usually get queries via these but no viewings. I sell privately most of the time, don't really want to compromise on a purchase by having a trade-in.
Sold my e46 m3cs in July. Took 6 months to get sold. A combination of ambitious pricing from me, but once I found the “market” price, sold pretty quickly with plenty interest
Had the car on here, M3 cutters and AT
AT best as at least you can see page views, to gauge interest and probably work out if you have priced correctly!
Depends what your selling, how quick you want to sell or otherwise. I didn’t line up a new car until mine was sold. Took the pressure of accepting any of the many low ball offers, up to 4K below what I eventually sold for!!

My E63 M6 took almost 6 months to sell.
My E36 M3 took 4 months to sell.
The price was pretty much spot on - in line with the market prices of the time - for both of them but they still took ages to shift.
There are so many factors, over-saturation, too much choice, reluctance to buy outside of finance, no dealer support/warranty, running costs etc and something that lots of people tend to overlook; market conditions.
Unless you're giving these things away, it can be very frustrating.

A quick sale needs keen pricing.
If you’re bottom end of the market on price with a top end product you’re gonna attract the full market of buyers in a frenzy.
When I choose to sell I just want rid.
I suppose it depends on your needs as a seller.
6 months of tax, insurance, garage/storage, maintenance, depreciation (or appreciation) etc all adds up.
All my cars have gone in a week, often the next day, always through forum/owner clubs.

Sold my E92 M3 a year ago next week. I didn't actually advertise it anywhere. Somebody was looking for an E90/92 M3 on the M3 Cutters forum, pm'd the guy, several phone calls between us, lots of photos/e-mails etc and a viewing was arranged. Two guys came down from London, looked over the car/history etc for about 3 hours, had a long spirited test drive and made me an offer opproximately £300 less than I really wanted but they wanted to take the car back home with them that night so a deal was done. Money transferred straight into my bank account, paperwork completed and they took it away. I did price the car quite competitively at the time which I think helped sell it to the first buyer. A nice straightforward hassle free deal...
I’m thinking I might fancy an E90 M3, but I’d only want to buy through M3 cutters now I think.
I saw an advert last week with a seller struggling on M3 cutters.
I’m not sure what the car was exactly or the price (for some reason the advert details were deleted which is retarded), but another user spotted it up with a trader for many £1,000s more a week later.
I’m not sure exactly but sounded like £14,000 ish to £20,000 ish which is bonkers!
Why you’d buy a car like this via a trader now is beyond me unless they offer a warranty like a BMW AUC, are recognised for sorting issues, and aren’t charging the earth.
The market is thin but it’s there. I think many potential buyers are just waiting for sensibly priced private cars... but it doesn’t help when traders do the above!

I have my e39 M5 for sale on a nationwide site tho on a smaller marketplace than the UK (Sweden in this case) It's been posted to 2 weeks today, and the only interest I've had on it is from two Norwegian guys. It's hard to sell an "enthusiast" car at the end of summer it seems since most of us northern europeans/scandinavians don't drive our nice cars during the winter, had I posted it for sale in late april I believe it would have sold rather quickly.
Trading it for something is out of the question since you only get really low ball offers.

Did he have the car up just on Cutters? Or on AT/PH/eBay as well?
Forums only get you a a very niche audience, also the fact that people on those forums probably own one already...
Indeed. I've been a member on M3cutters for a while but don't post much. I'm now trying to sell my E92 M3 but I can't post it on there because my post count is too low!Forums only get you a a very niche audience, also the fact that people on those forums probably own one already...
It's been on Autotrader for a few days. I've had 170 advert views but no calls.

I know I have a look through Auto Trader even when I've no intention to buy. I like a good nosy. It's been on Autotrader for a few days. I've had 170 advert views but no calls.
At least they aren't phoning you up wasting your time.

When I sold my E90 M3, I advertised on both M3Cutters an PH. Received lots of positive comments on M3Cutters, but it sold via PH. For previous M3's and M5's I've used PH, other specialist forums, word of mouth and Autotrader.
It's really luck of the draw. I can't say that one site was better than the others, as I've had mixed results with all of them.

I Sold my E30 M3 though a specialist on a sale or return basis, Ideally wouldn't want to repeat that experience.
CSL I sold on pistonheads privately which in many ways was much easier.
I'm thinking about buying another E46 M3 and have looked on cutters, seam to be some nice cars but often high prices for private sales, lots of positive comments from other members but not sure if the cars actually sell. Maybe I need o start looking at some of the cheaper ones on ebay etc to see the value in spending a lot more on a car with similar millage and age.
