Mods - Please don't move this to Jobs etc.. It's about work, but more just general chat - So Lounge is best.
We were chatting at work about taking a lunch break at work, and how many of us do or do not.
I seem to find from my workplace, the guys on a manual job (techs) seem to take theirs, were as desk-based seem to not take it.. So there's a few options above to find the correct answer. If you're desk-based, but take your lunch break at your desk, not "working", this is classed as taking your break.

We get an hour lunch but anything not taken can be banked as such so I take half an hour and build it up to take a full day off, saves me from using holidays We were chatting at work about taking a lunch break at work, and how many of us do or do not.

desk job here.
At my workplace i choose to take a half hour lunch instead of the full hour so i can leave earlier. They say we HAVE to have at least 30min lunch. if i couuld I'd choose to not take that lunch and work through it, munchiing on a sandwich as I work, but that would be only so I could leave even earlier.. Having said that I hate taking lunch at my desk, i want to be as far away from it as possible so it feels like a break.
and to answer the question.. you have a lunch regardless, it's up to you how you wana use it. some still want to work through it, some don't and will refuse doing any work or helping out. just depends on the person.

I work in the sales department of a manufacturing company. We work a pretty basic flexi system and have a 15 minute break at 9:00am and must take a minimum half an hour lunch break. Normal working day for me is Monday to Thursday 7:00am to 4:30pm, but we get to finish at 2:00pm on Fridays which gives a nice long weekend. I suppose I sometimes do a bit of work during lunch but it is mostly reading the news and eating a sandwich.
I know all about it "depending on the person".
I worked with a lady who could be tricky when she was in the right mood but once the clock struck 1pm if you asked her anything she would say can this wait as I am on my lunch now. Very regimented. Least she knew how to say no I guess but all the same.............

It depends where you are. My business is attached to a garden centre but involves lots of driving so I tend to take it when I can, or in bits. To be honest no one really monitors whether I take 30 mins or what.
The garden centre staff get an hour (unpaid, as is the fashion now, so that their eight hour day will encompass the whole opening time
)
We are in the countryside so they all end up sitting round looking bored or smoking in their cars.
Returning to my
comment, it's a pedantic point I know, but I wish lunch breaks were paid and my contracted hours adjusted to suit, e.g. I work an eight hour day with a half-hour break (unpaid). I'd rather work an 8.5 hour day with a paid lunch break.
Then I could stop explaining to every single new member of staff that no, they can't work through lunch and go home early, while in reality thinking that seems quite reasonable.

Agree. We've got people who want their cars back by a certain time, and some will be happy to work lunch and go early - But aren't really allowed for some reason.
Desk job, 45 minute lunch break, eat a sandwich at my desk and usually surf the 'net or do some personal admin etc. Should probably go out for a walk or something! Occasionally go out to the shops or whatever. If I'm really busy and/or have a tight deadline I will work through it but that's not often. It's good to switch away from work for a while.
Generally eat at my desk, doing a bit of life admin, but don't time how long it takes. I tend to work much longer hours than 9 to 5, but equally I won't think twice about taking ten minutes earlier in the day between tasks to browse PistonHeads or whatever. Nobody is monitoring me - trusted to get on with my work.
Occasionally a few of us will go to a cafe and have a proper lunch break, but normally we will eat at our desks.
Sometimes I will have so much on, it'll be bites between work, and sometimes I sit on PH for a while.
I don't mind this, as I tend to walk out the door close to 5pm, whilst a lot of my colleagues work later. I'd rather get home and see the kids before bedtime, and then log in from home if the workload dictates it. But it doesn't often.

We used to have a goods in guy who was almost the dictionary definition of jobsworth (funnily enough an ex-copper).
He used to sit in his car eating his lunch for an hour, in clear sight of the loading bay. If some un-booked-in delivery arrived, it was great fun watching him studiously avoid eye-contact with the driver.
It's a look I've only ever seen elsewhere on the face of binmen when you are stuck behind their lorry.

I take a half hour lunch break, but that is a full lunch break as far as I'm concerned. I don't regard an hour break as being beneficial, I don't need it, and it would just mean going home half an hour later.
But I'm in engineering, and I'm used to a half hour being the standard. Aligns with what the shop floor guys get, too.
