Hi all. This is my first post on Computers and Stuff and as predicted it is one asking for help. Anyway, the problem that I have is that I can't seem to make a connection to the internet at home on my laptop. I can make a connection that will give me a list of ISPs to choose from but when I actually choose one I cannot get a connection - it dials the number and manages to get through but then just times out. I have tried with several ISPs but always get the same message. Any suggestions gratefully received PS Although I use a PC every day (excel and access) I am a complete beginner whenever there are any systems type probs!!!

So do you have an account with an ISP?

Does it dial and then give you an error message?

What is the error message?

You actually have to set up an account with one of the ISPs and they'll give you a username & password in order to be able to dial in to their servers.

Its a bit of a chicken & egg situation, as you can't do this online until you have an internet connection already! Maybe the best bet is to pick up one of the freebie CDs you get in shops / magazines which will manage the process for you.

Next question: which ISP do you choose? Over to the forum...

You can use a "guest" account at www.freeola.com as an emergency account.

Get your modem to dial 08451 12 12 12
No password or id required

I go through the setting up of the account ie filling in surname, first name, address etc etc and then press next.

It then dials and then says that it is connecting but never actually connects.

The message goes something like 'cannot make a connection - would you like to try again?'

Hmm - very frustrating.

at least you will be able to tell if the problem is at your end or the ISP setup...

UPDATE

Well - thanks to everyone and especially to McFlurry as my internet connection is now back up and running and I spent all last night 'updating my speed camera detector'
