A programme on Radio 4 a few days ago featured a man who wanted to find out who his biological father is/was.

He sent off his DNA - a swab from the inside of his mouth to a commercial organisation and the results came back with a positive identification. He has now spoken to his father and they are meeting in a few days time. Another programme presumably?

My question is - how can they identify his father? Unless they have his DNA on file - which seems unlikely, how can they identify him?

I think I read on the Ancestry DNA thread that there was a guy in the USA charged with murder or something like that as the FBI (or whoever it is) approached one of the DNA ancestry companies and they had a match for the DNA.
