Hi All,

My brother is in search for a performance saloon between £10-15k. His requirements:

1) Petrol
2) Ideally German with a strong preference for Mercedes. He is not keen on BMW or Audi.
3) Would like a manual, but is happy to consider an auto too
4) 4 doors
5) engine capacity 2.0L or greater

It would be great to see what suggestions you have. At present his search has focused on C-class but has not had luck finding an appropriate car.

No performance Mercedes will be manual, also when you say performance do yo mean the cooking models or the full fat AMG/M/RS models?

A Passat R36 might be worth a look?

15k could possibly get him into a very early, high mileage C63, but I'm not sure that would be an advisable route to go down.

It would be fun though. Well for a short time anyway.

Thanks all for initial suggestions.

Happy for it to be an auto. Performance could be both cooking, and the full fat. He doesn't mind on either.

Does it have to be German?

I've just picked up a tidy Lexus ISF for £15k, I looked at the C63 AMG and E90 M3 too but this was a much better example for that sort of money.

Jaguar XFR

A friend ran one for a couple of years and it was brutal.

This example, in the classified is low miles for £17.5k

The interior is very special, fine grade leather everywhere.

Saying that, I prefer this limited edition XFR in black. Newer. Private = better value for money.

Is his preference for a Merc but he'd consider others or does he really just want a Merc C Class and he's a bit bored of searching?

There are a good few performance saloons for that money. How old does he want the car to be and what kind of mileage is he willing to put up with?

He could have any of the following that are german

BMW M5

BMW M3 V8

Audi RS4

Merc E63

Merc c63 (leggy/cat "x") more than likely.

Audi S8

If he was to be swung away from german then he could include saloons like

Lancer Evo X

Lexus ISF

Chrysler 300c Hemi

All very different but kind of meet the criteria you have specified.

Why does he want German - is he looking for lots of kit/leather/build/brand etc over performance etc?

For me, if i had 15k to spend i'd be tempted by the M5 (v10) or the M3 (V8) .

If he wants a good performance car tell him to put his bias aside & look at all performance saloons (not ones from just one country) then buy the best one for him.

XFR very good cars & well worth a test drive before taking off the list of possibles.

Don't be to sure about that, 300 vs 500+ despite an Evo/STI being lighter they'd be beaten.

Again don't be too sure.

It's all depending on the model you buy. Get yourself a Type 20 or Type 25 Litchfield impreza and it will hit 0-60 in approx 3.9 seconds.

It all depends on the reasons the op wants the car - German usually combines the uber saloon with uber speed and refinement. Japan does not (lexus/infinit perhaps a bit of an exception). So understandable why you'd choose Mercedes if that is what you are after. .

But choosing German doesn't necessarily mean reliable and it certainly doesn't mean cheap to maintain. Any M-car, RS/S-car, AMG-car is going to expensive to run / insure / maintain / repair.

If that isn't the reason and its just power grunt and power. Then the Japanese market offers so very swift cars in saloon form for that budget. Granted not as refined. But they'll be a great car to drive and very engaging and to add to that, likely less expensive to fix if they go wrong - at least in my experience (3 bmw's vs 2 Audi's v's 4 imprezas).

Another vote for the ISF but I am biased as I’m on my second one (and it’s up for sale on eBay wink)

For what it’s worth I replaced my last one with a modified Evo X with almost 500bhp but there was very little in it between them both for my usual driving.
