How to transport a horse box. Can anyone help?!
Discussion
I’ve got a bit of a conundrum chaps and wondering if anyone could suggest a solution.
A friend has found a horsebox for sale in Clacton and needs to get it to Gloucestershire. It has no MOT and the transport company has now quoted nearly a grand to deliver it.
They don’t have that sort of money and they wanted it to be able to escape and start a new life. I can vouch for them being good people.
Can anyone suggest a cheaper way of getting it back? They simply can’t afford to bring it back. If anyone knows then it’s PH.

Does it count as an HGV? If so I’d imagnine the rules are very strict.
I believe you can drive a car with no MOT as long as you’re going to a pre-booked MOT appointment. AFAIK there’s no mention in the rules about how close the MOT station has to be so you might get away with booking an MOT near the destination and driving straight to the station. It might also be viewed as taking the piss if you get stopped however so you might not get away with it.

It will need another, larger, flatbed HGV to move it or a specialist HGV recovery truck. Neither will be cheap I'm afraid.
The current daily hire rate for a 26t beavertail truck is around £300+vat, add a driver, banksman/mate and fuel for the return trip, £1000 isn't far off the mark.

I guess by horse box you mean one of the bloody lorries that is limited to 5mph and can only travel on the road when your trying to get somewhere. In this case a bigger tow truck.
Or dismantle horse box, transport, reasemble.
If it is a horse box as in trailer them surely hitch up to 4x4.

You’re quite right. It’s not a hook up job but a ford van type. Looks like it’s as old as I am and I’m pretty sure my chassis has seen better days.
At least I’ve helped her explore the options and she can start to look at other ideas.
Congrats on your big 10k At least I’ve helped her explore the options and she can start to look at other ideas.

A horsebox without an MOT is likely to be rogered. If they can't afford to have it delivered, they'll need to find one that runs and is closer to home.
Our local DVSA test center had an area where MOT failures or others given PG9's were parked, without fail every week there was a horsebox in there. Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
