I parked my car in a parking bay on a public road the other day. Even with the near side wheels only about 2" from the kerb, the off side wheels were overhanging the white lines. Although I didn't get a ticket, it made me wonder if I could have been ticketed as I always though the whole car needs to be inside the lines. Is this correct? Thanks.

There is a legal minimum of 240 cm I think, 180 cm on narrow roads.

That doesn't look 240 cm to me.

Using 335d dimensions; rear track is 1572, rear tyre is 255, add all that plus 50 and you get 1877mm.
Repeat using that Volvo’s dimensions with the widest track (front or rear).

Side-issue, has anyone fell foul of a width restriction of 6’ 6” (2.013m)? Whether by law, or by physical limitation. There is an old bridge near us. My son came using Sat Nav and just got over with mirror(s) folded, my wife’s Fabia, gets over with mirrors open - just. I drove up to it in a 335d (2.031m) but bottled it.

The guidelines for car parks are 2.4m x 4.8m minimum and for roadside spaces, I think it's 2.0m x 6.0m.

We have moved now, but I remember this coming in at Basildon’s Eastgate Centre. Fabulous improvement. Yes, the Essex Wide Bays was a pun, but the result was welcomed.

...or get L-shaped white metal/wood pieces and place them on the ground beside the car to fool the wardens.

As I understand it, the criteria for normal parking spaces dates back to the sixties and has never been updated, whereas a small car now is the size a large car was then.

The T25 behind is clearly out of the box as well, and they are 1.84m wide. The space is too narrow, given that some modern SUVs are a fraction off 2m wide.

Even a VW Golf is 2.017m wide.

Flipping nightmare towing my trailer to collect a car.

Many areas of London are no go zones, and had the same problem near Manchester last year.

To be honest, yours is the only situation I have sympathy for. And those who need to daily drive their work vans.

I drive professionally around a lot of rural Scotland and the sizes of some of these SUVs are really becoming a menace. The issue being as much their size as the manner in which they are driven. Your average Transit driver seems to have a much better grasp of the width and capability of his vehicle than your average RR driver on my experience.

Manufacturers should be seeing this as a wakeup call that the 'size war' has too stop as it is to the greater detriment of all UK road users.

However realistically I can see councils bending and just removing the restrictions when Ms. Wealthy Influencer and her FFRR complains.

There's an offence for "double parking" if your vehicle overhangs a parking bay, but only if it's also parked more than 50cm from the kerb.

The OP is parked legally.
