I find I’m making more and more stew type dishes where stuff needs to be browned/fried on the hob first and then slowish cooked in the oven.

Guess what I need for the job is a Casserole dish, so what’s a good one?

Le Cruset is nice stuff, but very expensive.

Sainsburys do a small range, we have two of them and some Le Cruset stuff ... to be honest I cannot tell the difference in either looks or performance.

I got a really good cast iron pot from Lakeland a few years ago, it only cost £30ish iirc. Looks like this.

I'm not sure if they do them anymore though. The last time I was in they only had Aluminium pots.

Think we got a Le Cruset style one from Dunelm Mill i.e. cast iron and enamel, cost significantly less than the branded item. Anyway that's what you want. Use it on the hob to do all the browning, whack in all the other stuff and liquid, bring to boil, put the lid on and stick it in the oven to cook slow and low.

Mmmm, getting towards that time of year.

I've got a couple of the Sainsbury's ones, but got them when half price.

Thought I'd seen Aldi or Lidl selling some (but can't find them frown )

'Cousances' is worth looking for though it's now made by Le Creuset. It used to be cheaper and seemed just as good; our Cousances casserole is decades old and as new.

If you have a T K Maxx near you, there are ALWAYS Le Creuset or clones in there, and occasionally they have very very deep discounts. Which is nice, but v bad for the kitchen cupboards.

We've a couple - an Aldi one and a Le Creuset.

Can't tell the difference between them. I prefer the colour of the Aldi one.

Worth looking at Lodge cast iron too, very versatile, and often the lid can be used as a pan too.

We've got a ProCook one along with assorted bits from there.

Seems good for the money, certainly a hefty bit of kit

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've come across this Andrew James casserole that seems a great deal and comes with very positive reviews too.

What's the catch?

Looks ideal, don't overthink it, it's a cast iron pot, covered in enamel at the end of the day.

You could casserole perfectly well in an oven proof saucepan, so this will do the job admirably.
