Having this looked at on Thursday by local specialist but wondered if I could bother the hive mind for some speculation before then.

The car is a fairly new to me 2010 2.7 Quattro Tip A6.

Every now and again I get what can only be described as a whooshing/grating noise following a shift from 1st to 2nd, and sometimes 2nd to 3rd. This only appears to rear it's head in 'Drive' when in traffic and travelling down hill (bear with me here). I've found then when travelling down hill in traffic the car tends to hang onto a gear a little longer than when on the flat, which would suggest why it only seems to happen then.

I have since managed to replicate it in manual mode, driving the car to around 2k rpm letting it sit there for a second or two longer than you would normally and then shifting up a gear.

It's a weird one, and I've spent hours searching for similar problems online to no avail. Generally the car drives really well, and the noise is only present when pootling around, when pressing on it's happy as larry.

The car had a health check and full diag check on Monday, I was hoping that whatever this is would be found during. Nothing was reported, and it's only today that I figured out how to replicate it. I'm booked in again on Thursday to demo said noise, so we'll see what they say.

I'll try and get a video on my way home from work this evening.

These have got a ZF auto box in them which are normally bullet proof to big miles, so maybe if you don’t get anywhere try a ZF specialist.

As mentioned, there is the ZF 6HP gearbox in these, very widely used box and very reliable. What I do find, with the permanent Quattro system, I hear more noises from the box than in cars that aren't permanent AWD (e.g. BMW). It could be normal. Id advise visiting either an Audi specialist or a ZF specialist.

Pop it into sport mode and turn the stereo up a bit.

Normal turbo noise, I'm just being a sensitive sally.

It needs a couple of minor bits and pieces doing following the health check so they'll have a proper poke around it to make doubly sure, but for the time being I can stop worrying.

To be honest, the more I hear it, the more it sounds like air rather than anything mechanical. You have to be really listening to hear it, so if it gets any louder I'll take it back.

So I was right.... turn the stereo up!!!!!

My MMI is knackered,, no sounds from anything, no music, no phone, no satnav, nothing. I hear a lot of 'worrying noises'..... but its still going strong.

Mine does the same sometimes. I always assumed it was a bit of a software oddity, a lighter than normal throttle input confuses it perhaps. Also upshifts when coasting downhill on light throttle often results in a slight thump to the shift as well (it was given a clean bill of health by a ZF specialist).

Yup, sounds familiar. When I remember to, I short shift to second using the paddle, seems to smooth things out. I'm sure if I weren't in Sheffield it's not something I'd notice, but we're blessed with them there hills.

I've owned the car for a couple of weeks now, so far really enjoying it. Bit of a step up from the tired E39 touring I had been using for the last 5 years.
