When did the Roma 'sign up to a charity' scam hit the UK??
Discussion
It does seem to take a while to spread to Britain. The Greek Tragedy posers started making inroads a few years back, but I've not met the deafness scam yet.
My favourite one in Paris was the deaf guy who understood my broken French well enough to bring out an English form for me to sign.
Just strikes me as weird, surely going to Uni/getting a job is a better way to live.

Oh right.
Who would even stop with those people waving a pen and clipboard at you like that in that bottom video?

there are so so so many immigrant beggers now in London.
Like, if you're standing outside having a beer, maybe once every ten minutes someone comes and begs for money.
also, now, I'm noticing the old women, crying pregnant woman or limpy , crouchy men approaching car windows at traffic lights.
This is how it was in India when I was there in 2010.
This is not how it should be in London in 2018.
My sympathy is nil I'm afraid.
I have family members that need anything spare I have.

As far as I'm aware, most are not independently run scams. Ie the people the end "customer" meets are very rarely the scammers, more likely to be some poor souls trafficked and ran by a larger cartel whilst not being used for other slavery/prostitution tasks. My favourite one in Paris was the deaf guy who understood my broken French well enough to bring out an English form for me to sign.

Same with most foreign beggars, they'll mostly be ran by organised criminals who can utilise everyone for different revenue streams-children for prostitution, adults for slave labour, grandparents and disabled for begging.
At least your common or garden British beggars will actually use the pound you give them for a cuppa on themselves (even if it's simply for a wrap of spice or heroin)
Incidentally - I also put the clipboard jockeys for shelter, cancer, save the rhino as the same ilk.
just give us your debit card details on this form in Tottenham Court Road and we will take 20 quid a month forever out of your account of which no rhino will ever see.
Charity is a massive scam.
You want to help , go and help, but don't just handover cash and think you're doing any good.

You forgot the bit where they call you every couple of months to try and increase the direct debit. We warned Macmillan to not do it again after they tried twice, we said we would cancel the DD. They called, we cancelled the DD. just give us your debit card details on this form in Tottenham Court Road and we will take 20 quid a month forever out of your account of which no rhino will ever see.

Called Chuggers in Australia (Charity Muggers). Ironically, most are English, usually on Working Holiday Visas. just give us your debit card details on this form in Tottenham Court Road and we will take 20 quid a month forever out of your account of which no rhino will ever see.
They wander malls, shopping centres, even car parks and stores looking for suckers to collect their CC's. The "legit" ones take regular payments, a portion of the first one is given to the Chugger as incentive. The less than legit ones are a card harvesting scam, selling the numbers on to criminal organisations overseas. I'm surprised Chugging isn't more prevalent over here.
These scams are the same the world over and just require utilising a few basic self preservation techniques.
1. Don't talk to strangers.
2. Don't talk to strangers (I know this is technically one point, but it needs to be mentioned twice).
3. Anyone you don't know isn't your friend... Doubly so if they're pretending they are.
4. Never ever give out your credit card details (or address for that matter).
Given the rise in contactless in cards I'm surprised none of the less savoury characters have cottoned onto the fact that they send out your name, card number and expiry date in encryption so weak they may as well be clear text and started wandering around with a concealed reader. I guess I've overestimated the criminal element.

Chuggers, hate them with a passion.
I was trying to get to the bank to sort out getting a house deposit transferred and got acosted by 3 of these vermin one after the other. Escape from the 1st into the second, etc, etc.
Fair play to the council who banned the little s
ts after complaining about them, last time I went into town, none to be seen. Bit late really as I would rather internet shop now than go into town.

Just been accosted by two different Roma type young girls with their clipboards. Deaf and mute no doubt, but didn't wait to find out.
I know they have been at it in Paris a few years, but how long have they been in Surrey
I was in Berlin in the summer - it's a very common scam over there and they especially target tourists. Bloody annoying.I know they have been at it in Paris a few years, but how long have they been in Surrey
