I keep looking at 06-08 RR TDV8’s with 100k mileage and am thinking it is a itch that needs scratched. I blame Harry’s Garage for this desire completely.
I worked for Land Rover in 05 when TD6’s were new and remember that they were lovely but broke down a lot ( it is a Land Rover). TDV8 hugely improved both engine and interior.
Logic is that all the little faults will have been fixed and I’ll get 20k trouble freeish miles.
Heart says yes head says no.
Anyone bought one of similar age miles and have any advice so as I don’t empty the bank account on repairs smile
Cheers.

Do you want one?

Yes = buy one.
No = don't buy one.

We have 2002 TD6 home since the 2002 as a family car. There have been so many issues with the car (including the infamous gearbox). We had exactly the same idea as you (change it for the TDV8). Also after watching Harry biggrin
So, after quite a lot of research, we went to Germany 2 weeks ago to see two 2010 cars (I live in Prague but there is bigger choice of cars in Germany). Both cars were facelifted but with the 3.6 with the 6speed rather then the 4.4 with the 8speed. Even though both cars looked good and the sellers told me that they are sound, both were dogs. One was very different in reality than in pictures (very unloved car probably - dirty inside and out). Also, it looked like the car was stationary for quite a long time. And the other one was a hidden crashed car..
And when we got back to our car, we realised that our 8 year older car is in so much better condition.. And since the prices of TD6 are so low, we think about just use it until something very bad goes wrong.

After all the research I think it's worth it to go for the TDV8. They are great cars for the money, as Harry said in the video. Also, I think they look so much better than current RR (that's subjective, I know). If it is a good example, it won't be probably that troublesome. However, it is still an expensive car to maintain, don't expect it to run it cheaply (there isn't such a thing as a cheap L322 biggrin), so make sure you do your homework.

Other than the normal stuff with used cars, main issues with them are:
- rust (tailgate and rear arches)
- EGR valve/turbos
- make sure that the air suspension works properly

Check that the oil in gearbox was changed regularly. They are much stronger that the older ones in the TD6 but still need some service.

Hope you have a better luck than us!

If you find a good one they are great - done over 300k miles in a 3.6 and 4.4
They do go through brakes but provided you have a decent independent garage then I would not hesitate- they do throw the odd bill but over 15 years my average annual service/repair bill is about £1500/£2000 a year and I do about 15k a year.

I looked and would have bought one but the stars just didn't line up and the ones I wanted either suffered from non existent comms from the seller or were literally hundreds of miles away with an interesting back story.
And I wanted red.
In the end there were just too many horror stories, Good ones are great but bad ones or even mildly average ones were awful. I'm not afraid of running costs and I already have an old rr but I decided there were other, safer options.
