Afternoon all,

My working pattern is about to change in Jan 19, where I will be commuting from Plymouth to Portsmouth every weekend (Costal road, A38, M5, A&B roads till M275. 178m one way)

Currently I do it every 4 week's, in my A4 3.0 V6 TDI, £70 to tank up and get 450 per tank. I reckon I will burn £280 per month on fuel.

I'm looking at something more economical, so far I have come up with a A3 1.9 Tdi or a MK5 gold 1.9 TDI. Personally I'm thinking Golf as I have not had one before.

Thoughts PH'ers?

My lodger has a 2.2 civic diesel. He has to drive Bristol to Plymouth every other week. On the motorway he hits 62mpg (calculated not trip computer). It’s done 155K miles and recently went through an MOT with no advisories. Might be worth a look? The engine is pretty clattery but as a work horse it’s pretty impressive going.

It's just the one 'Z' actually. (Name the film - bonus points)

No but on a serious note... maybe a g-wiz?

Currently your getting 35mpg ish? Guessing at a 60L tank... something like £6750 fuel costs over 2 years (£280/month).

If you find something that does 70mpg in the real world, saving you £3375 in fuel, will you spend that changing cars?

You already have a mid-sized diesel that i'd say is perfect for the job.

My A4 does (on that run) 400 per tank, I reckon (Google / PH research) 600 to 700 in a golf size car.

Maybe a Leon, Golf or something equally small...

That type of golf is 900 to 1500 round these part, plus their is one with a new Cam belt, water pump, DMFW and cloth. seems like. budget buy. I have wanted to change out of my A4 for a while (Bored) so I could put that cash towards a weekend project.

Get your A6 mapped & get a bit lighter on the throttle the money you'll spend on buying something different means you won't really save anything.

How much were you looking spend?

My A4 has a super chips map on it, I have tried an eco run and still getting 450 per tank on the costal run. Car has a mini service every 6 months and a garage service every 12 months.

I doubt very much if you would be any better off changing your car. The two cars you suggested must be knocking on a bit now of the have the 1.9TDi in them.

Keep the car you have, drive it and maintain it carefully and run it into the ground.

I'd get an extra 50-70 miles out of every tank after I remapped my cars.

If you're sat on the M27 between Southampton and Portsmouth, your current car is going to be such a nicer place to be than your suggestions...

If your Superchips remap is making your car less efficient - why not just revert it back to basic and pocket that difference instead?

Better the Devil you know...

Hi so I have been looking at E61 520d, missed out on a beaut for 3850, M sport, comfort, access, extends flight pack etc.

The decent e61 520d are all £7k to £8k for a 2008 at 88k. and most have small nav, manual seats. not essential, but after seeing the above car with everything on it, I can't help but feel I missed out on a gem.

About 30 mins away is a 2012 F11 520d SE, it has 101k on the clock FBSH up for £9999. it is just within my reach.

Thoughts on a 6 year old car on 101k?
