Looking to replace my 2004 Civic 2.0 Type-S with a new / nearly new medium sized hatchback.

It's got to be reliable and nippy (0-60 in 9 seconds or less)

Any recommendations?

Leon 1.4/1.5 TSI?

Come in some decent trim levels, good engine and should be fairly reliable and fun to drive.

Fair few on the second hand market too for reasonable money.

Not sure about the Leon. According to the Which? report, Seat reliability goes downhill after 3 years.

I am also rather wary of the long term reliability of it's turbocharged engines.

Kia has a decent reliability record and a 7 year warranty.

However, it looks like the average mpg of a Kia Ceed GT is only 38mpg which is the same as my 14 year-old Civic!

That vauxhall is quite a good looking thing, but the tiny front discs look a little lost inside those big wheels.

Your criteria in the OP was 'reliable & nippy'.

Buying new or nearly new implies that you’ll have at least 2.5 years of manufactur’s warranty remaining (or much more if it’s something like a Hyundai or a Kia).

So how important reliability really is maybe depends on how long you intend to keep it?

If you can cope with a slightly smaller hatchback, how about a Fiesta ST-Line?

5 door, 138bhp, 50+mpg

Pretty much the same engine found in a variety of Audi's, VW's and Skoda's which has received plenty of praise.

I personally had one in an A3 for 3 years and now in a Leon. I've never had an issue, so far.

Perhaps as long as my current 2004 Civic 2.0 Type-S (owned for 10 years, never broken down)
