This evening I listed something as a Buy It Now, and I just had notification it had sold. The money is in my Paypal account and I can see the buyer's name and address. All looks normal.

But I also received a message from eBay saying: 'MC067 Suspicious buyer for item. We had to cancel bids for the buyer, xxxxxxx, because they aren't registered on eBay'. Well, he started his eBay career on 12 Sep, and has 0 feedback, and is now showing as 'no longer a registered user', but I was able to send him a message asking if he can clarify matters.

eBay say 'We have credited all associated fees except for the final value fee for your listing(s)' - in other words, as listing is free, they have taken the FVF anyway!

Has anyone else had this? As far I can see it's OK to post - or will he take the goods and get a chargeback? Can he actually do that if he's no longer registered?

Most likely they will attempt to charge back and scam. The user was probably previously blacklisted from eBay/PayPal and had used similar details to re-register which set off some automated alarm bells.

Thanks. If he doesn't reply by tomorrow noon I'll refund his money.

It wasn't an iPhone X or laptop though, just a £20 pack of camera film. Seems an odd thing to scam for.

Well he's come straight back with 'hi there my account was randomly suspended im just trying to fix it'.

He's confirmed the address but obviously copy/pasted it as it has 'United Kingdom' at the bottom.

Account created with stolen info, the info loss has reached eBay / eBay checks prove it’s bogus and he is cut off.
Ignore and move on. If they don’t reclaim the £ all the better.

Thanks, I'm sure you know all about these things! I'll do nothing.

Or play him at his own game and mark as dispatched?

I wouldn't refund. Just wait until you have further instruction from either PayPal or eBay on what to do.

He just asked:

'hi there have you shipped it out?
thanks'

How can he message me through eBay if he's no longer a registered member?

I'm wondering whether to ignore, or reply along the lines of 'eBay advise me not to process the order as you are not a registered member'. Or maybe 'I can only ship the goods when you've got your account open again' - which I doubt he can.

There was one interesting coincidence. His username is 5 letters with 2 numbers on the end. A couple of days after he bought the film, another user, who joined within a day of him and with FB of 1, bid on some film. His username was also 5 letters with 2 numbers on the end. I cancelled his bid and blocked him.

Might be worth a call to either PayPal or eBay and request their assistance. It is a weird one for sure.

Thanks; I chose 'report buyer', told eBay the position and requested advice. As they've taken the FVF I don't feel inclined to refund the buyer or I'm out of pocket.

I don't understand why someone with a stolen account - and we presume someone else's money to use for a limited time - would wast time buying old camera film when there are much more valuable things to steal.

Refund him minus the fee. And a suitable handling charge from yourself.

Potentially doing some small test purchases on a stolen card before they clear it with larger ones.

I believe it's a common tactic they use as without "warming up" the card first, they'll trigger anti fraud.
