Been reading a few hysterical newspaper reports regarding the new "Vulture" camera system that seems to being rolled out in various parts of the country. It's claimed that this system can detect other offences such as phone use, no seat belt, eating and smoking etc.. From what I can see it seems that this is just an upgrade on the quality of photo taken when speeding offences occour - which in turn could show any of these other offences. Am I right in my thinking ?
(As usual if anyone can come up with personal instances of being "done" for anything like this I'll be a bit more convinced)

Hers just one example

Don't know but at least 'Vulture' is an appropriate name for camera system, maybe they're going to call it like it is from now and not trying to dress them up as 'safety' devices anymore? scratchchin

Dont really have any issues with them catching people on the phone or not wearing seatbelts.
Looks like some IR LED's illuminate the car to see through the windows/work at night.

Eating, drinking (not alcohol) and smoking?
Doing Those three things are not an offence by themselves unless you're not in proper control of the vehicle. What are they going to do with that video unless you caused an accident?

Seems a bit pointless if it only works for people who have been caught speeding?

I'm baffled why they've put these cameras on the A55 because although it is a steep section of road this seems to be enough to deter people from speeding. I regularly follow drivers through there who are hard on the brakes doing no more than about 65mph.

I went through recently scoffing a McDonalds so I'll report back within the fortnight if a NIP for eating at the wheel comes in.

as long as the passenger was steering while you held the big mac with both hands, you should be ok wink

I doubt they have done little more than mount high-definition cameras with an IR Spotlight.

Claiming that they can identify a driver eating, without a seatbelt etc would be impossible with the current state of technology (If they have somehow advanced machine image analysis by ~20 years I'd be quite impressed)

Furthermore, Anyone that does insist on leaving their belt off whilst they enjoy their big mac meal as they cruise past the camera at warp 6 could plop a sufficiently dazzling LED IR Flare (Powerflare etc) on their dash to blind the camera.

How can you eat a big Mac while driving... it falls apart using 2 hands let alone 1. A double cheese burger is the safe option. No salad bits that go on the floor, secured by melted fake cheese and won't make a mess. A bonus is you can buy 3 for the price of a big Mac. Your all doing it wrong.
