Odometer Stopped.

Having a great blast in the sun and noticed odometer about to pass another thousand miles, however got to 999 and then.....wait for it......nothing more. It stayed on 999 so reset the trip counter and that had stopped too. Speedo reads OK so assume that the odometer / trip mechanism has stuck. Has anyone else encountered this? Have read threads that point to senders et al, but this seems mechanical at odo? Does the dash have to come off? If so how? Bugger bugger bugger. Thanks. (1998 4.5L)

They all do that, sir.
Its been known to fix itself with some weapon's grade reversing. Ours has had this "fixed" several times...its off to Racing Green for the same thing again shortly.
Can't help you with a fix - we've not found anything permanent ourselves yet - but I empathise.
Happens a lot. Its the speedo itself. Sometimes it will correct itself, sometimes not.
You could try reversing the car, it has worked for some - but never for me! I've had the speedo out, shook it about a bit, put it back and it worked. On another occasion a dealer removed the speedo and fitted another, that was completely broken so they put the original back, and hey presto, it worked again.
In the end I sent mine back for overhaul at Speedy Cables, which fixed it for good. Not hugely expensive, but you will be without for a few weeks.

How do you know your doing 60? the speedo doesnt work in reverse, does it?

Ours stopped at 29,999.5 and despite waiting and trying all suggested methods of curing it the dahs had to come out. There was an extra bit sticking out the back of ours which I gently tapped with a toffee hammer. When it looked like it had more sufficiently far around I went out for a run around the block (with Mrs FFG holding the dashboard) and it worked. Kept going until it was on 30001 and then put the dash back together. No more problems (until we get to 39,999.5).
