Trying to find an old registration number

I’m hoping this doesn’t fall foul of the no amateur sleuthing rule.

My father passed away over the weekend. amongst the various tasks we’re having to deal with is sorting through his bank accounts.

He didn’t. Keep a list of passwords, but did keep one of clues to himself of them. One of them indicates that it’s the registration number of his first car. We know the make and model and the colour.

Can anyone suggest a way of finding out the registration please?

Gosh, no idea sorry, however why on earth do you need to crack bank account passwords.

Surely a death certificate will do??

If not, isn't what you're doing slightly illegal?

I can't think of any way to find a reg number simply by knowing what sort of car it is

unless it is a very unusual car that a marque expert might have knowledge of.

What car is/was it ?

It was a Vauxhall Viva, and my mum can remember the colour.

We’ve having difficulties getting the death certificate because the GP who needs to sign it is on annual leave so we’re just trying to expedite matters.

Once you get a grant of.probate, the banks will transfer any assets to the executor.

So if you know the banks then take a sealed copy (I've one stamped with the seal) and you will get access.

Did this a few years ago. It's a pain, but Furness BS were fantastic at helping me find all the accounts and sorting out HMRC queries on historic payments.

I think your best bet to find the registration would be old photos, friends or relatives. But the death certificate would be the best way to unlock the accounts.

Even then it might not help you as if he was smart enough to use a car reg number as a password then I'd hazard a guess that he had two reg numbers back to back as his password.
