My gear cable linkage snaped on my 996 turbo well thats what it feels like. The gear stick resembles a broken limb.
All I did was knock it up a gear then I heard a slight twang then loss of all gears.

The car is at the dealers now and they'll be looking at it on Monday morning. luckly I've got a Porsche warranty but i was wondering is this covered and why has this happened
on a 2 year old 996 Turbo X50.

Does anyone recomend the short shifter.

This rings a bell.

sory can't help but I'm sure the turbo guys can. I'm pretty sure Ive read somewhere on here about someone having similar problems.

think they replaced part of the linkage with an after market metal one ? something like that anyway.

IIRC it was Dazren who had the problem and the aftermarket metal part certainly rings bells.

www.pistonheads.com/members/showcar.asp?carId=2685

Costings etc, covered in my profile, August and September 2004.

OPC fitted a new plastic linkage FOC. Then a month later I had them fit the evoms billet alloy replacement.

There was a thread about the problem at the time:

Same thing happened to my car and also Adams RTurbo. It's a common problem, caused by Porsche using cheap parts for the 996.

I si the gear linkage but Porsche Tonbridge Just been told that the gear linkage is not covered by the warranty even though I know a lot of other people have had theirs fixed FOC what should I do.

What does the warranty cover if not this...;-(

Do you think I should insist...?

Warranty should cover everything except consumables.

Mine was replaced under warranty without question.

I had a simlar problem once on a 996 c2, but it wasn't as the guys are describing here. It was actually the cable had snapped at the gearbox end.

Cheers Darren, I think I need to change my OPC
sometimes I wonder how much they really know about Porsches and how much they know about making money.
