Up and till Friday I could put my hand on my heart and state I have never stole.
Friday morning really early, on way to a job and knowing I was going to be on site all day with very little opportunities for breaks I popped into an Asda to buy a lunch for later.

I picked a chicken salad, a cheap can of Asda own brand gut rot energy drink, a cereal bar and a Royal Gala apple and walked over to the self serve section.

Every till was down. An assistant told me to try the self serve section that dealt with bigger orders. It crashed as soon as I swiped my first item. I shouted over to the assistant to let her know and was directed to the one working check out which was queued back for miles.

I initially considered ditching my lunch and going elsewhere but one "fk that" later I'm afraid I have crossed the line from upstanding honest citizen to thieving scumbag.

I have to admit to doing similar - was directed to a seld serve, kept going wrong, finally finished scanning and then it crashed on payment.

Scanned it all again, crashed on payment.

At this time i could see the cashier out the window having a smoke. Fed up i grabbed my gravy granules and fled.

As long as your lunch is below £200 notes the BIB seem not to give a foook ?

Might be worth buying/stealing your teams/colleagues lunch as well.
Up to 50k a year as the BIB don't care ?

ive notcied lately at my local asda they seem to have a small webcam in the self service checkout with a small LCD screen and a flashing white like with the words 'recording in progress' on the screen, obviously they're showing your face. Like what's the point in that? they're now recordin the items you're taking our your basket and into your bag, so how would they tell if you're not scanning something? yes I know the baggage area measures the weight but you could use simple slight of hand when it comes to paying.

There’s a saying “ There’s no such thing as a free lunch”

Clearly not used the Tesco self service checkouts.

Just sayin.

I thought every weighed item went through as potatoes?

Ikea has self service tills, and no scales. The temptation to accidentally 'miss' a £200 bookshelf when scanning 10 items must be huge.... whistle

I can understand the frustration but not the stealing.

Why not just shove the money at whatever member of staff is there, regardless of what they are doing or whom they are serving, say there you go, and then walk out.

It is not shoplifting if you pay like that.

Strange behaviour.

Then to come on here and admit it like you're proud of it.

Weird.

Pretty stty thing to do IMHO.

But I gave the cashier the $50 they gave me instead of the $20 the other day.

People stopped using their local shops when the supermarkets came.
They appreciated the convenience and the lower prices more than they appreciated the personal service.
The smaller shops went out of business.
Supermarkets have since reduced the staffing (and therefore service) levels.

Integrity is doing the right thing even though no one else is looking. Even if it may delay you and cause some frustration. Petty theft is just piss poor in my book.

I’d go back and explain what happened and offer to pay.

I once genuinely forgot to pay for a bookcase in IKEA, didn't realise until checking the receipt at home. It wasn't a £200 one though, worth no more than £40 IIRC. It happens apparently, the barcodes are small and close together and all the boxes look the same. After hours trapped in a windowless vision of Scandinavia I just wasn't concentrating on counting the boxes while I scanned.

Ooh it's a slippery slope, you'll soon be mugging old ladies and then onto holding up a bank with a sawn off.

I once popped back to a "restaurant", Vapiano on the south bank, to pay for a main meal they had missed on their awkward smart card system. The people with me thought I was odd but it was the right thing to do. Of course, the 5 min delay did mean that the traffic out of town was at least 30 mins slower. Is that reverse Karma?

Dishonesty is dishonesty, the amount is unimportant.

Having said that I managed to get a pensioners rate at a barber the other day. I kept quiet and the gave the girl a bigger tip than normal.
