Has anyone any experience of which 'rating' of Manuka honey is needed so any health benefits are felt? The reason I ask is there are massive differences in price and wondered if it is marketing or actual benefits? Thanks in advance

I took Manuka Honey to help get over Helicobacter pylori infection in 2011, after reading lots of info on the internet it was suggested that anything over UMF 12+/MGO200 (medium strength) had enough active antibacterial properties to affect the body, a rating lower than this is just like standard honey.

At the time I bought Manuka Honey, it had to be over UMF12+, stated that it was Active or Raw, had a Batch/Track & Trace number on it and from New Zealand (Australia has claimed the Manuka/Tea Tree bush is also native to their country). I bought many jar brands but stuck to either Goldenhills (Amazon/Ebay) or Steens available from most supermarkets, to get the benefits from the honey you should consume 3 teaspoons a day and should always be put on bread/toast as oppose to in hot water (gets diluted) so it can stay in the stomach longer.

After taking the Manuka honey my stomach was calmer and I had little or no acid reflux.

Our vet used this on the cats foot/leg after it was caught in a trap, the wound having gone septic as it was trapped (we live in the country) for awhile. Saved most of the foot... amazing stuff.

Last year around Christmas both the wife and I had a seriously nasty cold, once it had run its course we were both left with crappy
coughs that would not shift, neither of us felt they were bad enough to bother the Dr with and that they would clear up by themselves, some three weeks in and they weren't, fed up I went to Boots, had a chat with the pharmacist who recommended a jar of Manuka Honey. Three teaspoons a day each and within 24 hours we both began to feel alot better and within a week the cough was gone!

I had previously treated the stuff around Manuka Honey has voodoo and or witchcraft however I have to say I am a convert, first sign of a cold and I jam three teaspoons a day down my gullet for 3 days or so and it never takes hold enough to even bother me!

All this could be placebo and anecdotal but if it works I won't complain hehe

how does this honey, with antibacterial properties, help with a viral infection, cold?

Garlic, sauerkraut are much cheaper, not celebrity endorsed mind, but will do better in the pseudo science stakes.

/shrug/ don't ask me was just sharing an experience. I did also quantify it all with a "this could just be a placebo" but I have found it works and while it works I will keep doing it!

That said I do like sauerkraut lick

Interesting stories. We are learning so much about the body, nutrition, the gut biome. I have added kimchi to my diet this ear, but frankly, it's not for me. I'm probably gonna look at kefir.
Manuka wasn't even on my radar, it is expensive stuff though

A browse of My Supermarket shows Sainsburys Manuka 15+ looks to be best value of anything rated over 12 at £24.50 for a 340g jar. Works out to £7.21/100g.
