Our 13 year old has been asked this in biology homework:

"Design an experiment using hydrogencarbonate indicator to work out how fast different plants photosynthesise"

Neither I nor Mrs So have a clue. Anyone here?

Yes I saw that but I am trying to work out a basic experiment using it and I am struggling. I didn't go to school the day they did "science".

I presume it needs to be other fields with time taken for the indicator to stop changing colour.

The indicator will show how much carbon dioxide is present, plants absorb co2 when they're photosynthesising. Get 3 plant leaves, put in indicator, shove one in a green house, one in dark cupboard, one as a control on the lab bench. The one exposed to most sunlight should have the lowest co2 reading. Or some thing like that.

Chastise child for not listening in class, no matter what they say I doubt teachers would set homework like this without the principals involved being discussed in class before hand.

You'd be surprised. It happens an awful lot at this particular school. I have raised it with them before. It is not positive.

The child in question is fairly diligent and will have been paying attention in class. Though the sciences are not his strong suits.
