I got a new car mid July and parked my current one in the driveway as the MOT was due around the 26th July. The aim was to do the work for the MOT (just rear brakes) and then either sell it or keep it for my partner. I was paying for the tax monthly and just thought it would continue as I hadn’t heard anything. I entered the wrong reg into the DVLA tax check as both cars have very similar private plates and found out the car is listed as “untaxed” ... I immediately found my V5 and went online to declare it SORN but it says I may be contacted by the enforcement team as it has been untaxed. I haven’t had any reminders since it apparently expired in August, nor was I made aware by email or letter that it had expired

Will they actually pursue me for the fine in regards to this? Nothing but problems since they did away with tax discs!

I had exactly this a couple of years back with a motorcycle that I was rebuilding. Didn't receive a reminder, forgot to tax it but then taxed it as soon as I realised, at no time did I use it on the road untaxed.

The 'compliance' team contacted me with an £80 fine, you can call them to pay the fine but they won't discuss it with you, AFAIK there is no appeal or anything you just have to pay.

I blagged my way out of a fine - said the SORN paperwork must have got lost in the mail.

You can try beat the impending letter by contacting DVLA arrears and back-pay your missing months.

About 12 years back I missed a renewal notice despite an active postal redirection, and went untaxed for a couple of months,, until a marshal noticed at Bruntingthorpe.

I contacted DVLA, who confirmed a fine had been raised but not sent out and I was actually offered the choice of 1. paying the back car tax, OR 2. the fine for no tax which was cheaper. I expected to be paying both.

Like a muppet I chose to the cheaper fine, a decision that came back to bite me when I wanted to take the private plate off the car - as I was forced to take the car into them for a visual inspection.

Hopefully, you get the same level handed treatment.
