Hi All,

My current braking set up uses EBC Yellow Stuff pads and Grooved and Drilled Brembo Discs. This is on an 07 FN2 CTR.

Looking at my current set up the pads seem to have quite a lot of meat on them and look ok front and rear.

The discs however, the holes are filled with brake dust and the grooves are now less grooved and more flat across the disc.

I'm assuming this wear is indicative of needing new discs do we think? Or is this type of wear normal? The discs were fitted new in January 2017. The car has done approx 4000 miles of mainly road driving with a couple of track days.

TIA

I found EBC pads were very heavy on the discs. Mind you, that was quite a few years ago and I don't know whether that's still the case.

Have you actually lost thickness from the discs? Your comment that the grooves have worn flat suggests very heavy wear, which would be alarming if so.

The vast majority of aftermarket drilled discs are cast iron discs with holes drilled in them. These are a fashion accessory which make no sense at all in a car that is driven hard. All discs are vulnerable to fatigue cracking if they are overheated, but drilled discs are much more vulnerable and can be a safety issue on cars that are driven hard. The drilled discs you see on high performance production cars will have the holes cast in and/or be made of steel to mitigate the cracking issue, and come with 10x the price tag.

If your pads are overheating and you need to degas them then either fit bigger brakes, or supply them with more cooling air, or fit harder pads, or use grooved (not drilled) discs.

It sounds like you have two issues.

1. You used the letters EBC while talking about brake pads.

2. You have grooved/drilled discs for no reason at all.

EBC are the worst pads known to man, & whilst they are up to the job of slowing/stopping a car on the road, they aren't actually very good at doing it well.

In spite of what the sales blurb says they are very good at depositing crap on discs & can you guess where yours has ended up?

In the holes/slots.

Get some better pads & clean the discs up with a small screwdriver and while you are there check VERY closely for cracking around the holes as if the brakes have ever had any sustained high braking such as track use they will almost certainly be cracked.

Honestly, i've never heard anything but good things about EBC. Not that i'm not open to them being an issue, but, I would imagine that they are less the issue than the budget "performance" brembo brakes.

I think given the above statements i will look to change the set up. It was done by previous owner (ive only had the car since May). But he was doing track work before then i think. I've inspected the discs and they are not cracked or warped. Don't judder or squeal. Just lost a little bit of braking distance and bite which usually indicates wear to me.

I'll travel over to the Honda forum to get some ideas as to what set up would be best for my car/driving. Thanks for the advice. Appreciated.
