Had to laugh at the BBC news apparently AA profits down due to less membership and a 15 year high in breakdowns with a lot attributed to potholes.

Apparently the AA say it's an epidemic and the BBC say that these potholes have been caused by the bad winter end extreme summer.

I'm leaning more on the years and years of under investment in the road network as the main cause.

Not their membership fees then? How much is it to join the AA nowadays? £60? £80?
I got breakdown cover for £30 of Groupon for 12 months (must remember to renew).
I'm sure lots more people shop around for it also.

potholes are a HUGE issue - Majority of people just do not understand the amount of damage it causes!

I must only have been half-listening, I heard them blaming the cold weather (BftE) followed by the very hot summer, I must have missed the catch-all "potholes" thing.

Still, £28m isn't bad, really.

They have also followed the car insurance industry model of hammering people at renewal time and when you phone up to complain how much it's gone up since last year and how you're paying more than it would cost to join as a new member they magically find some "discount".

Cheap or good?

For some years I paid £60pa to LV for breakdown cover. When I needed them they sent a monkey who diagnosed a flat battery. When the new battery didn't fix it they sent another monkey who'd have crushed the exhaust with his scissor lift if I hadn't been there to shout stop. The actual problem was a faulty starter motor.

The car was, fortunately, still under a dealer warranty with the AA. The AA sent a brilliant operative whose IQ was not only into 3 figures but did a perfect job.

And so this year I decided to pay more to work with professionals not monkeys.

Don't a lot of PCP deals come with breakdown insurance in the price?
9 out of 10 cars on the road are PCP, that's gonna be reflected in the AA's profits.

I was with them for 25 years. They sent me a nice gold card, with a letter saying how wonderful I was, together with a bill for twice the previous years premium, despite me not having called them out for years. I made the usual call to get it down to a more reasonable level and they would only knock off a few quid, despite me mentioning that a new member would pay less than a quarter of what they wanted from me. They also said that they checked new members addresses and they could tell if someone had left and rejoined from the same address and would refuse them. I decided to take my money elsewhere and am now with Green Flag, who have been excellent on the only time I have used them when the battery died on my car. From what I have heard from other people, I am not alone either.

Along with generous cash back offers from the like of TopCashBack - I used to flip my cover between the AA & RAC every year.

Wouldn't that be 9 out of 10 new cars?
