Glow plugs

Hi, I have a 2014 F25 x3 3.0 d & have had it for a couple of years now & have noticed that the glow plug light very rarely comes on, it always starts instantly so never thought much about it. Does it have to be freezing for it to come on or is there something not right? Thanks for any replies, Cliff.

It usually has to be below freezing.
