I'm thinking of buying a mostly original series 1 80. I want one that is as original as possible, one I can use regularly .. not a concours example. I like some patina on it. I think I have found one that looks in really good condition, few owners, matching numbers, mostly original, full history etc. I can get it for £17K I think. Its had a lot of mechanical work done and body/ chassis look solid.

What are you asking us? I'm not 100% familiar with market values on Series 1, but £17k sounds little on high side. I personally don't understand the excitement of patina. I spent nearly a year re-painting my series 3 in a bid to get rid of the desirable patina It will be a good investment. If your happy to suffer the usual Series Landy pitfalls then crack on.
I like patina.
It’s a more honest look of the car and it’s life rather then everything being erased.
I would be too concerned to use a fully restored one properly in fear of damaging it.
Which funnily enough was the big worry of one of thr Land Rover reborn cars at the Scottish Landy show, he had car 7 of thr initial run.
A lovely light green 49 but was scared to use it for fear of damage and losing money on it.
If you want an 80, get one, use it and don’t worry about it.
I love my 80 but it’s about a million miles from what you are after. Still a giggle off road and compared to my mates 90s, surprisingly competitive on rtv stages even though it does need a proper going over.
