Hello All,

Please excuse my ignorance if I'm asking silly questions, I'm not mechanically minded at all and I have spent a lot of money on getting a problem with my MK4 Golf GTI resolved by my local garage that still isn't fixed so I've decided to research it myself.

The issue started with the amber engine light coming on and 'hunting' when idling or going into limp mode whilst driving. First fix was an adaption of the throttle body which briefly resolved the issue. I then had the TB replaced and it is still intermittently 'hunting' when idling and occasionally losing power and cutting out. If I leave it to its own devices for a few minutes it revs normally and is fine for a few days. Also If it loses power, if I turn the ignition off then start up again after a couple of minutes all is fine for a bit.

From reading previous posts I understand if the TB is replaced the it is necessary to reset the CPU by disconnecting the battery for 24 hours, I don't think my mechanic did this. Would doing this retrospectively and following the procedure of letting the car idle for ten minutes then taking it for an aggressive drive be a sensible approach to resolving the problem or does anyone have any other suggestions?

The symptoms also seem typical of a faulty MAF. I have started the engine, disconnected the power supply to the MAF and the engine continues to run. The research I have done indicates that this points to a faulty MAF? I'm confident that I could replace this myself but I don't want to fork out for the part unless I'm sure my diagnosis is correct.

The ASR warning light is also coming on occasionally, which I believe is related to the power steering? I've checked the fluid and it's low. Could these problems be interrelated?

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I don't want to unnecessarily pour more cash into this.

Thanks

Herr Bouff

Have you run a diagnosis check on the engine with vag.com or a similar fault reader? Would be worth doing to see if any fault codes appear before throwing money at parts that don't need replacing.

Sounds like a lambda sensor to me... a relatively cheap and easy fix (drive way, even by an ametuer like me)

Had same symptoms on my golf and that's what it was.

Thanks for your responses.

I'm assuming my mechanic would have ran a diagnostics, will look in to replacing the lambda sensor.
