Thanks for the replies, budget £6K, second car so fun and as much bang for buck as poss.
Mustn’t be fwd or estate otherwise anything goes. Like the idea of a 2 seater sports car or fast car.
At 6k you'll be struggling to get a CLK55 AMG if you do it'll be high miles (in general you'll find more convertibles than coupes) so there are a few things you need to check.Mustn’t be fwd or estate otherwise anything goes. Like the idea of a 2 seater sports car or fast car.
1) When you start the car if you hear a clicking from behind the dash then the flaps that direct the air have gone this means the dash has to come apart so although cheap parts wise this is an expensive job labour wise.
2) Check to see what radiator the car has, Mercedes had a problem with the Valeo Radiator which allowed water to mix with the Transmission Fluid the redesigned version is made by Behr & that's the radiator you want to see.
3) The transmission filter & fluids should be changed every 40k if there are no receipts of this being done haggle hard.
4) Rust isn't really an issue but on the front of the rear arch you can get some blistering from where the rear tyres are constantly throwing stones at it caught early & it's an easy fix costing no more than £300.00
5) If you open the drivers door & look at the paint code & see a C or a K near the paintcode then it means your car has Ceramic lacquer which is self healing for light scratches, this one can cause problems if you don't go to a decent bodyshop as it can turn a simple repair into a nightmare.

You can get the earlier W208 CLK55 AMG but then you really need to inspect it for rust.

You could take a look at the very rare 5.5 CLK500 Sport but again it'll have big miles:

350Z for looks and fun factor and a lot cheaper to run, plus you'll get a newer year compared to the CLK. I can't imagine what repair costs will be like on the CLK, let alone the tyre shredding monster it is. If you go 350Z route my suggestion is go for one that hasn't been molested.
But I am biased as I've had a 350Z, loved it and still miss it a lot. So much better than the 370Z (had one of them as well and hated it). Even thinking myself as a 2nd fun car but my daily would be jealous lol.

Nothing really goes wrong with the CLK the biggest bill you may have is the 16 spark plug change, they're great cars I'd recommend one of them everytime. But I am biased as I've had a 350Z, loved it and still miss it a lot.
