I'd be looking at the cars below but be aware going up a segment size introduces you to a much better scope of low mileage Autos for sensible money:
Clio GT very good option & a nice place to be.

Alfa Giulietta (I'd probably go for this) Veloce, they're a nice size a good steer & well spec'd.

Thankyou so much for the responses so far people
I think the mx5 might be a bit unpractical for me and my daughter but I appreciate the thought it is a lovely little car
A family member has a standard up and the auto dsg gearbox is just awful late shifts low power

My personal rule for autos is that you need 120bhp for them to perform at their best also an engine with torque also helps,
with this in mind my first choice would be the Giulietta then the Clio & finally the Kia.
Now if you want something smaller than the Giulietta then the Mito is a good shout but the Giulietta is the better of the two.
Mito Quadrifoglio Verde

Quite a few years ago (~17 if I work it out now!), I needed to buy and insure the first car in my name - having always ridden motorcycles. I had "owned" and driven cars before, but they'd always been insured / registered in a g/f's name since they'd all built up NCD.
Unlike the OP I did just want a basic cheap runaround so was aiming for a 1L Fiesta. But - despite being in my early 30s - was getting insurance quotes of ~£1k because I had no NCD. It was utterly ridiculous.
I eventually thought : Sod you then, if you're going to screw me on insurance I'm going to buy whatever I want.
First car insured in my name was a 964 model 911 - and bizarrely, was initially only ~£1500 to insure vs £1k for a Fiesta.
Buy yourself a proper sports car - you'll need it after a life of motorcycles (and they do come in automatic)

I know what you mean with the insurance quotes every supermini I price up costs £1000pa crazy
I think I have narrowed it down to three cars now
Audi A1 Sportback
Mazda 2 sport nav
Suzuki swift sz5
Gunna take each car for a test drive and see how they work out
Anyone that has experience with them I would love to hear your opinions
