11 years ago when I set my system up I was on top of how it all worked.

Not anymore, and I disconnected the HDMI leads and can't remember what went where!

My TV (Phillips) has 4 HDMI slots (3 on the back and one on the side), my AVR has 3 slots (main and two others)

I have 4 boxes to plug in. Tv set top box, xbox, Wii, and Kodi box.

The wii and xbox used to share the same hdmi setting on the TV (HDMI2 on the rear of TV), the Tv set top box was HDMI1.

can anyone understand the above and suggest what is linked to what?

Thanks!

I'm guessing your Wii and XBox went into the AVR which went into HDMI 2. TV set top box into HDMI 1, Kodi box into one of the spare TV slots. That's based on the idea that you're used to using the TV HDMI selection to chose your source rather than the AVR's functionality.

If you treat yourself to a new AVR come Black Friday though it'll make life a lot simpler next time. Even an entry level one should have 5-8 HDMI inputs or so that can be renamed (certainly the Denon AVR's can - I'm guessing Sony/Yamaha equivalents can too.)

Cheers!

I've made progress of sorts..

I've got sound, and can get sound our of all the boxes, but only if the TV is set to 'HDMI 1'. I would prefer, using the other HDMI slots on the TV as it means I can save the picture settings that are preferable for the box in that slot.

Trouble is, I can't get any sound. For example, the Xbox is plugged into the 'HDMI 2' on the TV, so I can get the picture but not the sound (via amp). Therefore I assume that I need to adjust the settings on the amp? I used an Logitech remote befofre, and that would turn the Xbox on, VCR setting on the AMP and set the TV to 'HDMI 2'. How did that work?

I'm using a Denon AVR2309 if that helps?!

Plug the Xbox into the hdmi input of the amp. Plug your sky/virgin box and whatever else into any other hdmi inputs. Have the hdmi our go into hdmi 1 in on the tv. Then when you change source you do it through the selector on the amp rather than the tv. Tv just stays on 1 input.

I would try plugging everything into AV receiver, it's HDMI input slots 1-4 (ish) ... Then a single HDMI from receiver to TV's HDMI 1.

Us TV remote to turn TV on & set to HDMI 1... Then av receiver remote to change IT'S inputs (hdmi 1-4) to select what device you wants to use.

Then sound all comes from receiver.

Thanks!

So if I manually change from say 'tv' on the amp to 'Xbox', the tv should automatically change from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2? Nope that can't be right, great if it could!

I use different colour settings for games and TV, hence the need to use two/three different HDMI ports on the TV, this was how it was set up previously, but I'm baffled as to how I got the sound to come out of the amp!

You say you used to use a Logitech harmony remote. Do you still have it/use it? Logitech Harmony remotes use Activities whereby one button press e.g. PLAY XBOX will turn on the relevant equipment (TV, XBOX) and select the relevant HDMI inputs on the TV and the HDMI input you assigned for XBOX (VCR) on your AV receiver.

When you press each Activity it should select the relevant inputs so, for example, if you press WATCH KODI what input on the TV is selected and what is displayed on the AV receiver?

If you no longer have the remote or it's not working you should be able to log into your Harmony account from the software on your PC or Mac.

I think someone above has already given you the correct configuration. As you said you could get sound from your kit when you connect them direct to the TV your TV and AV receiver must be ARC (audio return channel) compatible.

Yes I do have/use the Logitech remote.

Its getting the sound back when Xbox is plugged into HDMI 2. I have a S-video lead, would this send sound back? Just a thought that the cable my have perished.

S-Video only transfers video signal so is of no use here.

As I stated above, press each Activity on your remote and observe which inputs are selected on both the TV and on the AV receiver. That should then tell you what inputs you need to connect to.

When you say that you select different picture settings for TV (set top box) and gaming, how do you do that? Do you do it manually? The reason I ask is you should be able to program that as well within your Activities on the Harmony remote by selecting the relevant commands on your TV. It might be a long string of commands e.g. Menu, down, down, down, select, down, down, select etc. Obviously your logitech harmony remote would need to be pointing at the TV during this.

I'm using the latest Logitech Harmony and can operate my kit via voice using the Amazon Echo.
