Loved the previous X games. I've lost about 800 hours between X3 TC and AP.
Looks like they've made a concerted effort to make it a bit less like excel with an interface and add in a few new game mechanics around fleet management.

Loved some of the earlier games but always found them deeply flawed in their own ways, whether it was crippling bugs or infuriating UI stuff. Really want this to be good.
This is where the modding community of the X games really come into their own. Just had an e-mail form Steam to say it's out.
As it appears my Rift is on a magical mystery tour of Europe in a DPD van
I think I might be buying X4 this evening to keep me occupied over a wet weekend.
ETA: Seems like they're having some bug issues, I'm not the only person who can't even get it to open
Already one hotfix out but apparently there's some issues still to iron out.

It’s similar to Elite in that you can fight, trade, & explore at your leisure. However there’s also a good storyline similar to the likes of the Wing Commander and Freelancer games. Plenty of ships to purchase from a small one man scout ship up to a carrier / destroyer type vessel. You can also command fleets, build an empire etc You usually start out with a small combat vessel, then you can upgrade it, p/x, keep it and hire a NPC pilot to wing up.
I’m not sure how much is out launch game, I know they’re planning on adding extra races as time goes on. I assume the full Game is there apart from that.

Just grabbed it and downloading whilst I'm at the office. Looking forward to having a potter around with it later this evening. Was watching Captain Shack's video earlier. Looks like a much better replacement than the last one and oddly enough I have more personal free time than previous installments now that I'm in the US on my own so looking forward to trying to find my path and building my empire!
Find a youtube video that shows docking before you start playing, took me ages to figure out what the indicators were showing me.
Looks pretty promising so far. Not keen on having to run around the stations to get to shops and crafting benches but I'm guessing I'll be able to teleport there once I've built/bought some more equipment, similarly with SETA to speed things up a bit.
Started hunting a few Xenon N last night and it seems they don't drop any loot, and you don't get a reputation boost from it, so may as well leave them and stick with missions and the thieves around the stations who tend to drop decent loot.
Undoubtedly the game will be a lot better once the user/modder community start putting together databases/spreadsheets/wikis etc as the tutorials aren't very good and there is no manual. For X3 I used to have various spreadsheets I'd downloaded of things like ship specs so I could easily compare models and decide what to buy.

Anyone else playing this now?
Quite enjoying it, typical X game though so while it could be considered 'complete' as a game there's a lot of fixes and improvements needed (like actually writing in game docs for the various weapons and items).
Yet to buy any big ships but as a mix of space trading, shooting and management sim it's pretty good.

Yeah, typical for the X games it's a bit let down by the lack of documentation and some minor bugs
I'm starting to get the hang of using ships remotely, using my original Elite to do some exploration while a Drill I captured is mining silicon and I'm running missions in my Nova, but until the pilots get trained up better I'm having to micro mange them with individual orders to go place or do a task. the Elite gets an option to "Explore", but seems to sit there doing nothing.
Also still getting the annoying mismatch between mouse and joystick that means sometimes the map drifts or rotates when I'm trying to look at it, and I have to wiggle stick in all dimensions to stop it.
Not tried trading yet as I've been too buys trying to expand the map. In X3 I used to get something quick like a Discovery Raider and just set it to explore as early in the game as possible to unlock the map, once I figure out how to do similar in X4 things should start opening up a bit.
Any idea on the range of satellites and resource scanners? In previous X games a satellite gave you price info for the whole sector, presumably in X4 they only give you info within a certain range?

Pretty sure it tells you the ranges of the deployables in the ingame encyclopaedia, one of the few things it does.

I'm struggling to actually make money, not so much make money as such but scale it up to the points I have more and more money coming in. It doesn't seem to scale linearly with the more ships you have trading.
Also ships seem happy to just sit and not do anything but you can't tell unless you manually go round and micromanage it all a bit.
I'll have a check of the encyclopaedia then, I've got so used to there being no info there I didn't check
Have you figured out what all the symbols mean on the list of ships you own? I'm assuming they ought to help with knowing what's doing what, but doesn't help with ones that have an order but just sit there. Pretty sure X3 had a text field on the list of ships/stations to tell you what they were doing which was a lot more useable, but you still needed to micromanage them.
Still not keen on running around inside stations, but presumably once I get some kind of teleportation upgrade I can avoid most of it.

Bugger that, looks more like a job than a game. The X games are often on sale DRM Free on GOG.

The modding community usually steps in to fix things up with some of the more annoying aspects of the game, at least in previous X games. One of the reasons I haven't bought it yet is I'm waiting for the bugs to be ironed out, either by Egosoft or the community (to be fair to Egosoft, they usually have them mostly fixed in 18-24 months)... That and I'm a bit overbudget this month already.

The X games are often described as "Excel with an interface". If you don't like doing a bit of managerial work they're probably not the games for you
To be fair most of my playing time in X4 so far has been flying around seeing what's out there and shooting the odd Xenon or thief. The figuring out how things work despite the lack of documentation I'm leaving to others and picking up occasional tips from forums.
I think the automatic trading stuff was all from the modder community in either X2 or X3 so it's nice to see it as core functionality, but I bet some modder comes up with a better interface for it fairly soon.
I've not used Excel at all yet, but will admit to using it a fair bit in previous versions. Hopefully before long someone will put together a spreadsheet of all the ship and weapon/equipment specs, which is always useful, and I used to make a lot of use of a station building/planning sheet in X3 to get my resource/product balance right on big complexes.
