Getting decent test drives?
Discussion
If I am spending ££££ on a car I want more than a quick run around the block in it.
In the past Lotus were great at just giving me the keys and leaving me to come back when I wanted to (although they did know me) and MINI let me have a Cooper S for a day but conversely Ford did the std run around the block in the Focus RS which was a waste of time and now I'm looking at a BMW M2 but really don't want a run around the block as my test drive. How do i get one for a hour or so on my own?

Not sure they'll give you one on your own but in my experience BMW are pretty good at giving a good long test drive. Last time I had a test drive in a BMW I think it was about 30 miles of mixed roads.
Funnily enough the most pathetic test drive I ever had was also at Ford. It was more or less a case of along the road out the front, round a roundabout and back in to the garage.

Depends very much on the dealer and also the type of car I think. Normally they'll want to sit with you on a 30min run to try and talk you in to it, sell you on the features etc.
Marshall Volvo in Lincoln were good with the V90 I was interested in. They let us have it in accompanied for 3-4 hours which was enough time to get to know it.

Agree, I had a shocking test drive in a Fiesta ST the other year - probably because I wanted to p/x a Cat D against it mind you...
Recently test drove a BMW M140i and a Mini JCW and both salesmen seemed to encourage me to break a 50mph speed limit which I wasn't too comfortable with.
There's a few indies near me that let you take a car out on your own - not sure how the insurance works on this?

Why not? There's only 1 thing faster than a hire car and that's a test drive car out on dealer plates.Recently test drove a BMW M140i and a Mini JCW and both salesmen seemed to encourage me to break a 50mph speed limit which I wasn't too comfortable with.
