I currently have a 2007 fireblade and a 2002 blackbird. The blackbird is my commuter and it's really starting the annoy the st out of me. I bought it cheap, have replaced loads of stuff on it and the ungrateful bd just wants more. Tonight, Matthew, the oil cooler metal pipes burst due to corrosion. So I'll fix it again but that'll do for me, it's not like it's that comfortable when it works although it is fast and handles ok now I've fitted new springs and dicked about with it.

So suggestions please if you don't mind. Budget about 5k to 8k although 5k better. At the moment I just want something with decent wind protection that's not dog slow but, most importantly, will not require loads of work. Nothing massive please, not interested in riding to mongolia and want to be able to filter.

Ta.

What’s the fireblade for? IMO only have 1 bike, or 1 and a scooter.

It's for dicking about on when it's sunny. I used to use my old fireblade (a 2000) all year round and it started to dissolve after a few years. I don't want to do that to this one and it's not as comfortable as I'd like a bike to be on the commute (getting older). The luggage options are limited too.

Cheers.

I'm a bit biased but suggest you try a vfr1200f

Great combination of power, handling and comfort.

Also unpopular and underrated so great value

Honda nc750 x is a great tool for commuting 80mpg storage where the tank should be, great comfy riding position and 8k service intervals . Lots about at that money including DCT models for twist and go convenience!

Honda VFR - as already suggested, I have a 21 year old 750 off eBay for £1000
Honda FJR1300 - if you want a bigger engine / more power. A guy where I work commutes on one, shaft drive, so no chain messing about if that's your thing
BMW K1300S - Should be in your budget, even more power than the FJR, also shaft drive, couple of friends commute on these and really rate them.

Go sit on a few and see what you think.

Had one, was pretty good but really unreliable. Did consider a new one but went and sat on one again along with a 1200 explorer and just couldn't see the point of anything that sort of size.

If a pure commuter is what you need, you need a super-scoot. There’s no contest.

Get a blackbird they said, it'll be bombproof they said.

To be fair to it it's been owned by a few fking idiots and I'm gradually putting back to a decent mechanical state but this isn't what I want to spend my weekends doing and it's not that comfortable. I did get it cheap but so far I've replaced the radiator, brake discs and pads, fork seals, chain and sprockets, front tyre, delinked the brakes, lifted the back, dropped the front and fitted hyper pro progressive springs. It really goes well and handles well but I can't be arsed with a bike that isn't 100% reliable. Cracking the oil cooler pipes was its last chance. As is so often the case with my stuff, someone will get something really well sort that will just work that I've lost patience with.

Sprint ST, get a late low mileage model for £4k..with panniers and top box. A very good all-rounder.

Whats your commute ?

Mile ?

% Motorway / DC / A&B Roads / City Centre

That may all help with advice .....

With your budget I ran a Ducati Hyperstrada for my 42 mile each way Reading to Moorgate commute, was fantastic bit fo kit with a top box .... only 821cc and quite a lot of fun ...

Should have said, sorry. It's about 20 miles on the A34 (dual-c) and about 10-15 A and B roads.

Ok, Hyperstrada could still be fun, as I love twins I'd also look at an SV1000 or if you wanted something older and reliable a good old Firestorm ....
