X-Trail or Kodiaq - Help.

Hi All,
We're looking to get a new family bus. It will be driven mostly by my wife and do circa 6k a year. We've got down to the X-trail and Kodiaq as a 7 seat option would be very helpful for taking both our girls and her Mum away on trips/holidays. The annual mileage dictates a petrol and my wife's dis-like of autos means a manual is the way. She's test driven both and does prefer the Kodiaq from a driving perspective and the interior does feel more modern well built, she felt the Nissan gearbox was a bit flimsy and the engine wasn't really powerful enough, however she prefers the look of the X-trail and because they've been around for a couple of years we could get one around the £17k-£18k mark, whereas the Kodiaq, having only been out for less than a year, is going to be £23k+ minimum.

Is Kodiaq worth the premium over the X-trail? Am I missing another option?

We have a Kodiaq and after 6K miles with holiday trip over to France, holiday trip to Cornwall with In Laws, Kids and Boards on. Various day to day stuff. We have found it to be very good at whatever is thrown at it. We have the 190DSG Edition model so filled with all the tech you need (Although the Park assist, which it happened to have as it was a stock car is an option). So thumbs up for the Kodiaq from us.

However have a look at the Peugeot 5008 or Kia Sorento or the Land Rover Disco Sport.

I had an X Trail 1.6 diesel Tekna for a hire car for 2 weeks around the time I was considering buying one. I've never been in a Kodiaq. Offered a choice of the 2 I'd take the Kodiaq without hesitation.

If I was looking I'd be considering the Kodiaq, 5008 (which we have - rear seats are properly useable unlike the X Trail), Hyundai Sante Fe, Kia Sorrento and the new model Renault Grand Scenic (surprisingly good looking for a bus IMO and great kit levels). I wouldn't buy an X Trail

be aware that VAG are having issues with wltp atm. we ordered a Kodiaq edition 2.0 tsi dsg in june and were told it would be delivered sept. Last we were told it may be mid jan if all went well. Have a look on skoda kodiaq uk FB page or brisko kodiaq forum - build week and wltp...

Annoyed as it was a really car to drive.

The X Trails are not bad but very whitegoods. As others have said look at the Sorrento & Santa Fe as they aren't as expensive as the Kodiaq but better finished off than the Nissan.

The new 5008 is lovely but a new model so still pricey and the Disco Sport is also nice but the better specced models are expensive.

In terms of straight-up value for money in a 7 seater it's difficult to see past the Grand Scenic

We have a 2017 xtrail and although its a good looking car its a bit boring.
Gearchanges feel horrid as suggested and although low down torque is good its a bit gutless.
Only reason we had it is that we needed to part ex a qashqai for something a little more spacious.

Saw a great Kodiaq yesterday but at that price point I'm not one to compromise too much and front parking sensors are a must for Mrs GR, so the search will continue. We'll have a look at the 5008 as it seems to be getting good reviews and Peugeot seem to be on a bit of upward swing with their recent offerings! Failing the nearly new used we might consider order a new one as long as the wltp issue gets resolved asap, does anyone have any updates on this? Skoda dealers cannot currently order any new petrol manual Kodiaq atm!

We also had a kodiaq on order since July (1.5 DSG Scout) and could not be given a timescale other then next year because of WLTP. Gave up and bought a Cayenne.

I would avoid the Sorrento and Santa Fe if buying rather than leasing because the AWD systems are notorious for breaking (coupler, diff and transfer box). Too much torque for the light weight cast alloy used apparently. Besides, you want petrol and they are only diesel.

The new CRV can have 7 seats and is a 1.5 petrol. Top spec won't be cheap but even the entry ones are well kitted out. The AWD system has been significantly improved also and I believe it uses the braking system to effectively mimic an LSD so you don't have the open diff path of least resistance problem.

There's also the previous Gen XC90. A bit ugly and hard to find petrol but a nice capable car.

Having had a look this morning at the German ADAC site it appears that Kodiaq is only WLTP certified for the 2.0 TDI engine at the moment. The 2.0 TSI is nowhere to be seen. I wouldn't go for the 1.5 TSi if you intend to go fully loaded and want to make rapid progress but it's fine for moderate progress, but that isn't listed yet either. Their configurator is lacking quite a few models at the moment, e.g. The Karoq Edition spec is nowhere to be seen whereas Peugeot is on top of their game and their 5008 is a great car. This is from a long standing Skoda owner who is about to jump ship as I will probably be in a nursing home before I ever saw my new car.
