I was out for a walk a few evenings ago with my dogs and one stopped for a wee, I noticed in the hedge next to me this...

It’s odd because this is halfway down a dead end road, there’s no more anywhere long the road and it’s half buried as you can see.

I like the idea of digging it out, putting it in my garden and repurposing it, but would I be getting myself in trouble?

Answers on a postcard please.

Looks rusty because of dog wee.

It would make a good wee post for my dogs in the garden.

I’d imagine the rust is from the 100+ years sitting where it is.

Well I guess the issue will be obtaining permission.

It's probably local council land, they'll not reply to your requests.

Did it up and wait and see.

To me it looks more like the stump of an old stink pipe?

Do your neighbours look like grasses? If not, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I shouldn’t think there would be need for one of those in rural cornwall?

When it was fitted (I assume) there would have been one farm at the end of this road so a stink pipe for a sewer seems odd, but then so does a lamppost I suppose!

Is it live? As in 240v electrics in there?

No doubt it’s on the council list to change to one of those hugely bright LED lights which are left in all night turning the street to daytime...

When I had/needed to move an old Postoffice junction box outside my house to increase drive enterence I called the council sent pics etc. Then a chap came out and verified it was obsolete scrap and would never be replaced. He asked if they needed me to pay them to dispose of it- I think he meant me pay them but I said no thanks pointing at the skip plenty of room there

It’s the base of a cast iron street lamp. They don’t like the frost and cold if the paint wears away and they don’t get protected again.

Very similar to the 30 or so that we have here. Ours are from the platform of a local tube station. They were upgrading the lighting years back and we bought them for pennies.

Beware though OP hey have very deep underground sections. There’s approximately 800mm below the bulging point at the base (just below the break in your pic). Very easy to shatter unless dig out carefully.

It’s too dark now but I’ll take a couple of pics of ours tomorrow to show you what it would have looked like.

Interesting!

It’s odd because the road it’s on looks like this...

A hundred or so years ago this road would have gone nowhere but to a farm and I would assume no sewage at all.

It’s deifnitely hollow though. Might get a weighted string and see how far down it goes...

Seems a waste for it to just lie there rusting away.

Save it and put it to some use I say.

Get it dug up!
Think of it as tidying up the countryside, I mean who is going to miss it?
A hundred years ago, that was probably the equivalent of the modern A30. laugh

If only there was some way of mounting a lightbulb on a stick to see what was in there.

Wow, that's going back some! 10 years. Shame we never got an update in the end.

Are you sure it's a lamp post base? Could it be the remains of a water fountain or public water pump?

That really does look like a cast iron stink pipe sat on top of other pipework, probably salt glazed ceramic from the look of it.
