M4 - Wheel judder
Discussion
Have a 2015 / 65 plate M4. 35,000 miles
Had new discs and pads fitted by BMW prior to buying the car in July this year. That was 1500 miles ago.
Over the last couple of weeks a judder through the brake pedal and less so through the steering wheel has started.
It occurs when braking fairly hard from about 60mph.
Can't see any darkening on the discs.
Any ideas of potential causes?
Should BMW cover this under warranty or the 5 year service plan?
Many thanks.

Check disks for run out using a dial indicator. E9* M3s tolerance for run out was 0.03 (i think). I remember measuring my newish disks when searching for a vibration (was my wheels, but my steering wheel would vibrate all the time above say 60mph) and they were 0.001 and 0.01. Apparently they are extremely difficult to warp.

Build ups of brake dust are also an issue form what Ive read. Do you wash your car using a pressure washer and a good wheel cleaner (not some acidic s
t that will destroy your paint finish?
Does your steering wheel judder when not braking? Say along a motorway at 60 70 80 or whatever. Your brakes sound more like they are the problem here though

Sounds like a uneven layer of brake pad deposit on the disks.
Holding the brakes on when the disks are really hot can burn on a layer of brake disk material on one part of the disk which will give a slight judder when braking.
Often you can "recondition" the disk surfaces by making a series of 4 or 5 hard (near ABS activation) braking (without stopping) from say 60mph on an empty road...then letting the brakes cool.

I had the same issue on a 2016 F80 M3 recently - I suspected it was build up of pad material on the front discs and pressure washing plus a good few heat cycles thru heavy braking did improve things considerably. The car was due a brake fluid change and I asked the dealer to look into the vibration which they did. They said the cause was warping which I didn't believe but they were offering to replace both front discs and sets of pads free under warranty so I didn't argue. HTH
