Low Oil Level 1 Series
Discussion
Hello,
Apologies if this is in the wrong place - I am a first time poster with extremely limited knowledge of cars seeking some expertise/advice...
Currently looking at buying a 2011 1 series (30k miles) and had an AA car inspection done on it (unfortunately my knowledge of cars is extremely limited). The car has had regular yearly services up until the last one in Dec 16. Most of the car was judged to be in good condition, however the mechanic identified that the oil level did not register on the dipstick when tested - he added 1 litre and it subsequently registered in middle of dipstick.
I am wondering whether this is now a car I should certainly avoid/is it now highly likely to have engine damage? Dealing is not going with the hard sell but has said they would include a 12 month warranty on it... Would be grateful for any advice

it's an indication that the car has not been in the hands of a loving and careful owner... but then if you checkied it over this evening, the mechanic would not have had any reason for concern.
I have a 1 series now and my car for the previous 5 1/2 years was also a 1 series... I would not buy a 4 cylinder BMW, petrol or diesel. The petrol cylinder motor is a bit yawnsome and not particularly reliable either. The N47 diesel is a motor I would swerve completely. That series of engines has a dreadful reputation for catastrophic failure that may not have been completely erradicated until the last significant timeing chain update in 2014.
Which engine is it? How many miles has it done? If it's a 6 cylinder and the engine is mechanically quiet, go for it.

If adding a litre only got it to the middle of the acceptable range, I'm guessing it was 500ml below acceptable before that.
But it seems strange as all the 6 BMWs I've had would flash up a warning light if the level was low - and they were all older models than this one.
I think I'd probably look elsewhere.
