I am in the market for a new car - have about 45k something a little fun but can't seem to find anything that really gets me excited - as an example spending 40k for a decent 9 year Gen 2 997 seems bonkers? or am i just being cheap??

An exige is where I put my cash (admittedly substantially less).

£45k would get you a S3 (maybe even a sport 350) or £10k less for a last of the line, mint, S2 SC car (mine is an NA for another £10k less) that is unlikely to depreciate.

Brilliant little cars:

Pleny of great cars available for £45k, but your not quite in supercar territory unless you go v old with big bill potential.

If it was my money I'd be looking at:

Audi R8
Maserati Gran Tursimo (4.7l version)
Nissan GTR
BMW M4/5

When you say ‘new’ car, do you mean new to you or a new car at a maximum of a year old?

I think this is where the upcoming Supra comes in, if they’re 45, otherwise you’ll be looking at super saloons/coupes like the usual 3 Germans or old Porsches and what not

I paid £37k for a 2016 Elise 220 Cup last year.
Most fun car I’ve ever owned.
Nice to know if it’s looked after I will get most of that back when I sell it.
Cheap to run too!!!

what sort of car would excite you? - I can't think of anything worse than a lotue elise for example - would miss the mod cons too much - alright on track but as a car for going to work I would hate it.

I have never driven one I must admit - but doesn't appeal.

It depends on what Porsche your buying as to weather it's worth 45k, I take it you want to spend around 45k on a fun car.

To be honest if you can't find a car that inspires you with that budget I don't think you could find one with 90k.

I suppose that’s a matter of taste really. I don’t use mine for work, I bought it as a proper driving car to get away from all the mundane over refined sports cars made nowadays. It’s fantastic as you know you are actually driving the car and not a computer game.

Yeah it would depend on what you want. Great steering feel, or lots of gadgets.

The issue with the Elise for going to work in is not lack of gadgets but lack of refinement.

Great replies ....thanks guys. Guess I have to qualify - was looking for a semi commuting sports car (ideally with 4 seats as I have 2 nippers). I should also mention, I have a 964 and a mini cooper s so another car has to be special ...

Keep coming back to a Maserati granturismo (and everyone loves them) but 2 things petrifies me - reliability and costs ( don't want to drop another 15k on repairs) and 2) resale? They don't seem to shift as fast.....thoughts?

That all depends on what your commute is

If it was me I would buy an R8, but if back seats were a must I would predictably look at the 997.2 C2S or the F Type as a left field choice. I share your concerns on the Gran Turismo, lovely looking things though.

I can recommend the GranTurismo there are two things to consider if you're going to use it for commuting then go for the full auto, as the clutch wear can be excessive on the MC Shift, but on the other hand if you're not commuting the MC Shift is the one I recommend I loved mine & will have another.

Servicing costs were between £800-£1200 & I can recommend fitting a Larini system & reliability on these isn't a real issue, they're very good when it comes to space, they also make you smile on start up.
