What's all this these days with handshakes turning into man hugs? Surely a good hand shake is enough but some guys seem to do it all the time even when I don't know them that well. It's all a bit fake and awkward. It reminds me of the fake kisses on the cheek that women do to each other. You're another bloke, I don't want to hug you but it's even more awkward when you try to avoid it.

It's like when football players scored a goal and there all this hugging and god knows that else. There seems to be a distinct lack of testosterone at times!

I was out in Manchester last weekend, very surprised to see a number of straight looking blokes kiss each other on meeting, on the lips. I remarked on it to a male friend, he just shrugged.

... he wouldn't kiss you?

Ps. How could you tell their sexual persuasion from looking at them?

Sometimes it’s just nice to hug a man, that’s all.

Don't have an issue with close friends having a hug. I have many friends old and new that I have played sport with (for example) who I maybe don't see quite so regularly and we will have a hug

Would only tend to partake with good friends though

Can't really see the issue tbh

Can you see if there are any more of those coathangers with the clips for hanging trousers while you're rummaging around in the back of that closet please.

ill hug my guy friends, and if im drunk and met a friends friend and gotten on with them ill hug them too.

with some people who i think might not be into full hugging I will give the half hug. the one where you sort of do a hand shake and while holding that hand you get a a loose hug/tap on the back.

It's the normal way men great each other in loads of places all over the world. I'd say it's a benefit of multi-culturalism that lots of young men now show genuine affection for one another. The sort of stuff women do as a matter of routine.

Not for me but I also don't like women giving me a hug if I don't know them. Unless they have big tits of course. A firm manly handshake for me.

Being a 43 yo man who isn't great with physical contact with anyone outside of close family (I like my own space), including handshakes (however I make myself do it) I find the whole trend of hugging difficult.

I always stay back when leaving somewhere, the wife is always all over her mates; hugs, kisses etc, I stay back so as not to get dragged in to it, as it feels awkward for me.

My BIL will always give me a hug when we depart, I extend my hand for a handshake, he always pulls me in for a hug and a slap on the back, I've known him 15 years and still it always takes me by surprise and still I am not overly comfortable with it. (however knowing what he is like I wouldn't be surprised if he has twigged that I'm not overly comfortable with it and does it on purpose!)

The wife and I spent a day with one of her far younger (22) male colleagues last year at a gig in Hyde Park; lovely guy and no issues with him whatsoever (apart from him being controlled by his mum!), when we dropped him home I got out of the car, extended my hand for a handshake, he did some weird grasp of my hand and pulled me towards him for a hug, I went with it, it was awkward and must have looked it as the wife ripped the piss out of me, all the way home, I just wasn't expecting it and I wasn't comfortable with it!
