Hi,

As warehouse landlord to a lovely company that specialise in rebuilding engines/fixing broken engines that have snapped chains/melted pistons etc I have been offered repairs/maintenance jobs done for free. I've scratched their back a few times, and been as lovely a landlord as you'll probably ever meet and so its only right they are now repaying that favour back.

They specialise in BMWs and their car park tends to be NOTHING but BMWs. Mostly of the 2.0d variant.

I have recently purchased a new to me 58 plate 535d E61 with 120k on the clocks. Its been sat in my drive for the past 8 months and its time to put her to work. Before I do so, I would like to drop the vehicle off on Monday for lots of work to be done.

Currently I have this small arsenal of stuff for them to do in the boot of the car:

Silicon vac pipes to replace the (probably) perished vacuum pipes
Replace OEM turbo pipe for Forge turbo pipe (for when I up the boost!!)
Swirl flap blanking kit
EGR delete kit
Replace the thermostats
Change brake fluid (no idea when it was last done, although this may be visible via the IDrive?
Air con regas
Coolant change
Check/clear scuttle drains

Is there anything else I ought to have done as preventative maintenance?

I only have to pay for parts, so would like everything to be done at once if possible.

They have a steam cleaner type oven thing that I see them put lots of car parts in. I was thinking they could steam clean my inlet manifold/intercooler perhaps.

Suggestions welcome!

Regards,

Mr Fox.

Intake filter / vortex filter, swap it out for a K&N one

Brake fluid can be checked with ignition on, engine not running. Press odo reset in until you see the hidden menu and press it for brake fluid and once again to show you when it should be changed.

There’s a how to on YouTube re this

Thanks for your suggestion DNA.

I'll do a little googling now.

Anyone else?

Inlet cleaning needs to be done via a walnut blast - try and see if they can do that.

The M57 engine needs glow plugs to be in good order to prevent issues with DPF regens. They are often changed with the glow plug controller, so I'd look into that. Swirl flap delete isn't compulsory with these engines, BMW have made the design a lot better since the early days of the M57 engine, so they aren't compulsory. Might be a good idea however as you are looking at a remap, although we are running 315hp on a bone stock engine.

Change the booster pack as well as the turbo pipes, also change the transmission oil as they need to be changed every 80k miles - I would try to get a ZF specialist to do that if you can, otherwise you can use your guy. It is a E61, so it might have self-levelling suspension, so check the air suspension if it has it and change if needed.

If you have any questions about the engine, let me know!

I’d leave the egr on and go for a Mahle/Mann or gen BMW air filter. Coolant type is G48, brake fluid type is DOT4 low viscosity, such as ATE SL6.

Swirl flaps don’t tend to break on these, just leak with age so removal is worthwhile, plastic blanks crack so metal are better.

New pollen filters are wise as they’ll need to be removed to clear the drains.

I have a pair of Mann pollen filters you can have for £15, send me a pm if you’re interested.

Hi, thank you for your suggestions? Can you tell me what the booster packs are?

Also I've already been thinking about changing the transmission oil but I'll leave that to gearbox specialists instead.

In regards to the air suspension, it was already on its arse recently after sitting for 7/8 months but the lads at the garage hooked it up to an autologic computer and forced her back up. Seems like the relay in the boot had a bit of water corrosion on the contacts so 3 new relays have been ordered for Monday.

Cheers.

I believe the Booster packs are a variety of pipes associated with the turbos and their oil supply. Changing them allowed for the car to become less oil-burner smelly on cold starts, so I believe it is to do with something related to turbocharger oil. It wasn't an expensive job, was quite easy to do and did make a difference. It is also very normal for a slight turbo whine to come from the large turbocharger at low RPM - it is just a characteristic. Any significant whine however and the turbo could need a service/replacement. Oil changes are key on these engines, high quality oil is needed at good intervals to keep not only the engine, but the turbochargers and everything associated with it in good shape.
