I don't know if this will work because PH appears to be suffering a migraine, or a fever or something. Maybe Ted needs to give it some TLC.

Anyway, I'm looking into buying a slow cooker, but as usual know absolutely bugger all about them.

Can someone explain the different types and maybe even recommend a couple

TIA
Stuart.

Don't know anything about them, but we used to have one and it was great - I'd be very interested to hear what's on the market now, as I'd quite like another one too...

Sounds like a job for Robert Dyas! A mate has one and starts cooking his sunday lamb on friday - the result is fantastic.

We bought one recently for about £20.

Has 2 or 3 temp settings, single large pot with a glass lid. 5/6 liter or something...

4(on hi) or 8(on low) hour cooking, dont lift the lid. works fine.

Funny you should say that but I've just got a book from this book club thing at work,
"Slow and clay pot cooking"
I'll try to get the author/publisher for tomorrow !

Yesterday I chopped up swede, carrots, onion + leek put in pot with a huge handful of parsley, thyme, rosemary and sage (Fresh from garden) + chicken stock + white wine, + 2 cloves of garlic + 1 bay leaf. This morning I put in 2 chicken breasts and switched on to low.

I'll tell you if it worked when I get home tonight, but it smelt delicious

Lamb Rogan is supposed to be very good cooked this way but I haven't tried that yet.

How odd. Rice Cookers on PH

Well last week I bought one of these

for cooking rice, although its also a slow cooker. All I can say is that is does fluffy rice perfectly. To produce fluffy rice, simply put in a measure of water and rice, close the lid, press 'Rice' mode and in about 10-15 minutes you will have perfect rice that doesn't stick. Then it will keep it warm for you without having to do anything what so ever. No timers to set, nothing, just press Rice and off it goes

My mates have took the piss saying I have just bought a digital saucepan but I love it, it is the best kitchen gadget so far.

There are cheaper ones on the market but I liked the silly led display Amazon uk is a tenner cheaper than everywhere else and you also get free delivery so that saves another fiver. Even when we buy in a Curry takeaway we just order the main dishes and do the rice ourselves its actually better than you get from the chinky

I tend to find its smells better than it tastes when I do something

We (or she) uses one most weekends, just bung stuff in before breakfast. Meat veg and gravy/sauce that sort of thing. switch on and come back at about 6 pm. and it cooks lovely. Start off with a colmens type mix for slow cookers you can't go wrong.

Throwing a can of soup over the meat/veg works better than the powder sauces.
Some slow cookers don't have a removable pot, these are a bugger to clean.
The best use I had for a slow cooker was when I was single. Put say a couple of pheasants in with some veg and get a meal out of it, add a few more veg and get a second day's meal, add some curry powder and get the third day's meal. Very convenient, just one lot of cooking for 3 days.
