Hi Guys,

My car is telling me that my rear pads are due in 1400 miles. However, on the inspection at my last BMW service they said it will be a fair while after that as there is plenty of life in them.

Is there a way they can adjust the time period on the car. I have seen it go yellow or red on the cars system if you don't do it on time, which obviously looks bad from a re sale point of view.

Any ideas/ thoughts?

I have just looked on my inspection sheet and the rear pads are showing 7 and the fronts 10. I presume that is mm.

What is the recommended measurement for changing?

Many thanks for any replies in advance

After a recent trackday in my F10 m5, my display also claimed rear pads needed in 1400 miles? I have since had a service at bmw with a reported 6mm left on pads.
When I enquired they told me they were unable to reset the cars display and it would recalculate when normal driving resumed, I have done 4000 miles now and still the display claims 1400.
It irritates me every time I start it up, so if anyone knows of a way to alter it I would be very gratefull.

I think it’s an algorithm rather than actual wear.

Correct, if you've driven it hard the car likely thinks that that is how it will continue and so predicts that is the range left... I don't think it adjusts upwards annoyingly!

You'll get a red brake pad warning on the computer if the sensor is tripped/wears down - at which point you need new pads and a sensor.

Mileage is just a yardstick - starts on like 35k when reset and adjusts accordingly - but until the sensor is "worn" down it's just a random number generator.

I think some BMW models were affected by spurious rear pad readings though so if you've not done track work / used the brakes harder than usual / no red warning to say change pads then might be worth getting checked out.

I understand that it is just a computer generated thing rather than actual wear, but surely BMW can over rule the car when the wear isn't that bad.

I just wouldn't want the car saying that the pads were changed late on the Service screen

The 1,400 mile warning on the pads is purely based on mileage. If you do a lot of motorway then you could easily have another 10k miles to go at that point! In my experience BMW won’t reset it for you, but you could do it with Carly if you’re that bothered.

There’s then a second point when the actual wear indicator kicks in and the meter starts counting down from 1,000 if I remember correctly. Proper ‘bong’ every time you turn on the ignition.
