Hi all,

So basically I can’t decide whether to go for 2015 Audi SQ5 with 39k on the clock with loads of goodies, priced at 29k or a 2017 Type R (new shape) with 11k on the clock priced at 27k.

I know they are completely different cars! To grow up or not grow up – hmmmm.

I’m 27 with a newborn 

Trying to weigh up the pros and cons on each.

What about something inbetween? An S6 Avant, for example - more room, bit more practical, amusing petrol rather than boring diesel.

Never grow up!!!! I'm your age did the adult thing bought a Tesla regret it.

So bought the wife a Golf R whilst I save for an Exige.

Lifes to short. Think how often you end up on a decent road and think wow wish I was in something really interesting for this. If you get a Civic Type R you will be.

Only down side would be if you do loads of miles then perhaps the extra comfort would be what you want.

I'm not a fan of the Civic, it'd be an SQ5 every time.

Not into the Avant, plus then there is the fuel to worry about.

My Mrs hates the type R which makes me want to buy it even more, but then the sq5 is so refined and luxurious.

- similar MPG
- similar speed
- similar deprecation (due to mileage differences)

what about:

BMW M140i, can get a brand new one for less than both of them and a nearly new one for quite a bit less again. 3 litre, RWD but also easy to live with?

Golf R or R estate

If you've a newborn then you'll need a bigger boot than a Type R offers, especially if you are thinking of adding to your flock.

Something like a B7 RS4 would be my choice. Or, make sure the wife has something big and boring so you don't need anything remotely sensible/practial.

Never considered a 140i to be fair - don't look anything special imo.

I also consider deprecation...

Sq5 will have 70k on clock after 3 years

Type r will have around 40k miles after 3 years.

obviously nobody can predict the future but depends on what happens with diesels i guess.

so it will definitely be either SQ5 or Type R - nothing else i'm interested in.

Type R - fun and crazy to look at!

SQ5 - sensible and stylish yet has the speed when needed (sounds lovely)

At the moment i'm 50/50 and it's bugging me haha.

Isn't the Type R still a fairly normal 5 seater family sized hatchback though? If it's the car you fancy, then go for it. It'll be just as capable of being a family car as a Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra or indeed a lesser model Civic will be. Which are cars a large proportion of the country use as family cars.

Unless you have some sort of physical restrictions you don't need an SUV to get through having a baby. Sure there is more space, bit more comfort but some people would try to make you believe its impossible without one. Despite families for decades having smaller cars with larger families and getting by no problem at all. We had a Ford Focus throughout our sons early years and was perfect. Our second car was an R33 Skyline, I used to go out with the family in it all the time again no problems taking a buggy, kit, spare clothes etc.

I liked the SQ5 when I test drove one but its unlikely to raise a big smile or be that much fun. The Civic will offer fun and it depends what matters most to you.

How often will it be used as the family car?

Both cars will do family duties fine but no point getting the Audi [and be bored] if it isn't the main car to carry the little one around.

I had to make the same decision [be it on a small budget] and ended up getting a Forester STi. My wife hates it but it's my car and fits the bill as a sensible car as and when required...my Wife's BMW 1-Series is a main baby carrier.

I think you'd be mad not to get the Type-R....though if petrol isn't an issue, I'd be looking at a Vauxhall VXR8, Merc C63, BMW M3 etc etc!
