Peugeot 406 2.0 Hdi LX

Bought this gem today for the bargain amount of £380 to replace my Berlingo, I had a thread on that on here too. Tge 406 is a 3 owner car, garaged most its life. Mot july 2019. 131,000 miles ish. I started a new job on Monday (7th October 2018) at Jaguar/LandRover so I needed something pronto. We had a 406 in the family 10-15 years ago so I spent most of my late teens in one. I know the 2.0hdi's are pretty much bullet proof. My berlingo had the same engine and was on 190k and was still going strong until it was scrapped on Sunday due to the rear axle bearings going, clutch going and the electrics playing up constantly. Enough waffling here it is.





'll get some better pictures but what struck me was how clean it is. No dents. Few minor scrapes on the front and rear bumpers but thats it. Nothings wrong, everything works. Its very very comfortable and quiet but then again I have been bouncing around in a Berlingo for the last 7 months.

Day 2 of 406 ownership. Oil, filter and air filter change.







A few randomly placed mists of oil dotted around rhe engine bay. It is an 18 year old car mind. I used Wynns engine flush as well. The oil filter was definitely not giving up without a fight. Probably the toughest one I've ever had to remove!

Theres a worn bearing noise from the alternator pully. So something to sort in the near future. The biting point is fairly high. There was no service history with it so a cambelt/waterpump change is on the cards. I've done this before on the lingo.

Defo some sort of localised leak at the back of the manifold there.

EGR lurks down there from memory could be associated.

They are surprisingly lovely places to be in, I enjoyed the ones my parent's ran in the '90s, petrol and diesel, they towed well and munched the miles well.

We had a 2 litre petrol R reg 406 for 4.5 years, went really well, completely abused by both my wife and myself across the crap roads of Cork. Sold it on at 168k miles, other than a bit of piston slap when cold and it’s appetite for headlight bulbs (3 to 4 per annum) it was still great.

I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for these!

My dad had a 1998 2.1TD which he ran from new to 285,000 odd miles, and my stepdad had a 2000 2.0HDi which he put around 60k on, I put around 5k on that one too.

Good luck with it, nearly bought one myself when I needed a car sharpish, ended up with a diesel Focus instead.

Don't know what it is, I have always had a soft spot for these, don't see alot driving around anymore that's for sure - brilliant engines, what the electrics like on these...?

Completely agree about it being one of the last great Peugeot's. Styling (both interior and exterior), performance all took a bit of nose dive in the last 15 years, my girlfriend bought a 308 1.4 petrol 72k miles (against my pleads) last July and it conked out after 6 months - stretched timing chain (£700+ just for the part!!) They are the most dreary car manufacturer out there nowadays imho. It suprises me how popular they all are!

I've had 4 406's(1 coupe) ,all 2.2 hdi, great solid cars with comfy seats. Now have a 407 pug saloons work well. Good luck

Well its french so theres always that, however everything works on mine except for the d/s rear electric window (I'll get to that) even has automatic windscreen wipers! Its old enough to appeal to me as I like older cars plus its been well looked after anyway so hopefully I've dropped on.

One quirk I've discovered is the 70 litre fuel tank. I put £60 in an it was only 3/4 full. Thought there was a fault with the gauge!

Ha found a picture of the old 406 that we had in my teens. 2002 - 2006 ish. A 1.8 petrol rapier, Also a Y reg. Which almost unbelievably has been on the road as recently as this year. MOT expired Sept 2018.

First hiccup tonight. Was happily driving along when my foot went practically to the floor with no throttle pedal resistance at all! I probably got 2000 rpm with my foot to the floor.

Apparently its quite common for these tension clips to fling off, not the best design. It was recommended that a cable tie loosely tied around the clip and the cable will avoid it going missing should it fling off again.



Also changed the pollen filter.



I have to say that this car feels slower than the berlingo did, dispite it has the same engine. It also struggles in 5th at 30 -35mph. The berlingo had no problem with these speeds.

Quick look on Ultimatespecs reveals
Citroen Berlingo 2.0hdi - curb weight = 1286kg
Peugeot 406 2.0hdi - curb weight = 1385kg

But its so much more quieter and comfortable. It is a relaxing place to be tbh.

I think its happened to everyones by what I've read!

First proper long drive today, half way across the country to get a hard plastic scuttle tray for the Mk2 Golf. 240 miles and not a beat missed I'm happy to say.

Its not happy. I've been experiencing an erratic idle when cold but whats more troubling is the huge plume of black smoke from the exhaust when i put my foot down. I've changed the maf sensor but that hasn't solved it. So another suggestion was that its over fueling due to a boost leak, which would make sense due to the poor mpg and underperformance.

If its developed when cold then maybe its the glow plugs?

Also might be worth trying a tin of BG244 - awesome stuff

Check air and exhaust pipes for leaks.

Change the glow plugs, they're cheap enough and easy to do, check all the boost pipes for splits/damage, and if you can get to it clean the EGR!!!
