I have the HQ quiz app (and see others are available), and they give away one or two thousand pounds away as prizes a day. How are they funded though, and how do they make money? No adverts or anything, and no money to pay them. Only thing I could think of is harvesting personal data as per hidden in terms and conditions, and flogging them? Any idea though?

HQ have started pushing the purchase of lives. £3.99 for one life or £9.99 for three lives.

This is a fairly recent addition to the app with it popping up each time I play. I can only imagine there will be further money making schemes as the app matures.

Companies like App makers and movies have ponied up for sponsorship and the chance to plug their movie. The Rock was on to Plug his movie Skyscraper earlier this year and the mobile game Toon Blast also added money into the pot. Some games on the US version can have over a million people watching/playing. In the UK it's usually around 50k for the £5k Sunday game and around 10k for the normal weeknight games. I don't usually stay and watch the whole thing but I did the other night, so many people won they got £4 each!!

Building up a userbase I suspect.

Once the app has a few million users, then they start milking them with pay-to-win and putting ads under their nose.
