Up for pre-order today and looking pretty impressive, I'm very tempted by the standard Pixel 3 being the pick of the pair for me. Back to what an acceptable size is for a phone for me and no notch (have you seen the notch on the XL? fking hell). Camera will be interesting to play with and the speakers a good test to see if half deaf me can even hear it.

Anyone else looking forward to either?

I have the 2 XL at the moment and that awful notch is enough to make it a 'no' from me for the 3 XL. How is a company with Google's resources turning out such terribly-designed 'flagship' phones? If you're going to have a notch then at least do away with the chunky chin as well.

I'm a real fan of pure Android so my only choice is Pixel but there's not enough here to make me want to upgrade. That should be a concern for Google - if the 'Pixel faithful' aren't impressed then what chance do they have of winning any major business away from Samsung/Apple etc? I know I'm far from alone in my thoughts on the new XL.

They also seem to think they're in a position to ask Apple-level money for their devices and they just aren't. An iPhone XS will be worth 70% of what you paid for it a year later, a Pixel will be worth about two Greggs' sausage rolls and a packet of crisps. The Pixel 2 launched at £629 for the 64Gb - the Pixel 3 will be £739 - that's a massive price increase for the base phone! To change my 2 XL 128Gb for the same spec 3 XL would set me back a grand! No chance, especially when it'll be discounted heavily within 6 months...

I also liked the look of the Slate but for the money they're asking I'd have a Surface instead - the new Pro 6 with 8Gb/256Gb is £1,180. Google want £969 for the i5/8Gb/128Gb Slate.

That all of today's Google announcements (Pixel 3/3 XL, Slate, Home Hub) didn't even get a flicker on here until now speaks volumes I think.

As someone who's had a Nexus 7 tablet, Nexus 6P and now the 2 XL I think I'll have to cross my fingers that the HTC boys that found themselves working for Google pull off some magic with the Pixel 4 XL's design next year...

No point in upgrading for 2 to 3.
For the 3xl you can disable the notch

Definitely worth upgrading away from the 1, that phone was a beta/alpha test phone and the 2 resolved all of the issues.

I wouldn't buy the 3 just yet as last year they discounted them for black Friday I think, I bought it at launch so it was annoying when I saw it discounted a matter of weeks after buying it.

I've a 2XL, so would never be upgrading so soon anyway and will wait to see what comes around over the next 1-2 years.
I've gone Nexus S, Nexus 5, Nexus 6P, Pixel 2XL, in the last 7 years or so. The 2XL had me deliberating hard last year because of the price, and the way pricing is looking on the Pixel 3 phones is increasing the chances that my next device may not be a Pixel. They're simply becoming too expensive, even if they do become most people's primary computing device.
There are far too many very good devices coming to market at lower price points to justify the high prices of the Pixel phones.

Interesting to read the views above. I’m considering a move away from Apple phones, after ten loyal years. As much for a change of scenery as anything. £1,000 for the Apple option doesn’t impress me really.

I will replace my iPhone 7 this month. Google Pixel 3 launch interested me but has been disappointing I think.

Do I go for a discounted / pre-owned Pixel 2 (standard, not XL)? Or add the extra £500 or so and get the iPhone XS, staying with what I know?

Edited to add: Pixel 2 64gb is £449 currently at Currys PC World. Should I be tempted or is it soon to be ‘old tech’. Pixel 2 XL 64gb is £499, that’s actually quite tempting, reason I was put off first time was price.

I've got the 2 XL has been a decent phone, only gripe has been the finger print reader isn't as good as my previous Nexus 6P.

I've had Nexus 5, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Pixel XL 2 a long with several Chromebooks.

I tend to upgrade every 2 years so jumped from Nexus 6P> Pixel XL 2. I have friends that do the same with Samsung and Apple devices, upgrading every year never gives you a big enough jump. From a Pixel 1 user this will be a decent upgrade.

I love the software features and the camera looks great but the physical design is awful, what were they thinking? In no way does the 3XL look like a flagship phone. I may go for a Oneplus 6T which looks amazing but you know the camera won't have the software of the 3XL.

Does anyone know if the camera software features will be ported back to the 2XL? If they are that might be an option for me, I love my Oneplus3 but the cameras on the Oneplus devices just aren't as good as the Pixels.

A real shame the price has gone up so much.

Nothing to make me upgrade from my Pixel 2 but a couple of friends have pre-ordered already (previously OnePlus owners).

I think I'm one of a very few people who doesn't care that much how the phone looks. I stick cases on my phones anyway so looks are irrelevant really. The Pixel phones and stock Android offer a great experience, which I value much more.

Me2.

I had to use a Samsung S6 for a period between my Nexus 6P and Pixel XL2. I installed all the stock Android stuff including launcher etc but it still was very clunky.

Obviously not worth me upgrading from my 2 which I really like, but I did download the new camera app from the Pixel 3. I use the camera quite a lot and already think the new interface is going to be easier to use.

Agreed. I really like my Pixel 2 more than I thought I would, and this is largely due to its' stock Android system.

I did the same. It'll be interesting to see over the next week or so if I notice a difference.
I installed the original Pixel camera app on my 6P after the Pixel was released, and the difference at that time was very noticeable. Not sure it'll be as noticeable this time around, but let's see how it performs.

I'm still running the Pixel 1, and given that lot of the clever software involved in the camera seems to be trickling down in the next few months there's not a lot of motivation to upgrade yet.

My only gripe is the sometimes dodgy BT connection on P1.

I did pre-order the home hub for the kitchen though.

I am keen, or shall we say, was keen on the 3XL, but the notch and the price are just off putting. I switched to Android after a very long spell with Apple and ended up with a One Plus 5, which I have to say is still running superbly. I will wait a while and see what OnePlus come out with next. Shame, as I really do enjoy Android and was looking forward to the Pixel on it.

Yes, it can. Which is what I'd probably do. Usefully it still leaves the clock and notifications up there, so the space is still being utilised.

If you have developer options enabled on your 2XL you can actually mimic this on your own device. It's not as rounded, and quite angular, but you get an idea of the layout/effect.

That is tolerable as long as the black bar takes priority over all apps (and they resize appropriately to fit) when in full-screen.

TBH, I'd far rather not have the notch and a slim bezel with the cameras and sensors in a thin line along the top.
