Hi all

Looking for thoughts on what pull up bar. This is for my sons birthday (aged 15).

He currently trains for middle distance at an athletics club (county standard so is fit in terms of running) and has asked for a pull up bar for his birthday as he wants to work on upper body / shoulder strength at home.

Currently looking at this one. It needs to be detachable and not fixed.

Anyone got this and can comment or can recommend another ?

Thanks

I have one, quite good, clever design. I'm not very heavy though.

Get this one: https://amzn.to/2C7VdqY

Have had it since someone on PH recommended it about 6 years ago. I use it every other day.

Bought my 14yr old lad a Body Sculpture one on Amazon a while ago, cost about £12 from memory & does the job perfectly well, can't believe I agonised over spending a lot more on one!

I have one of these.

It doesn't work at all. I ended up just hanging there no matter how much effort i put in I can not get my chin up to the bar. It hasn't damaged the door frame though..

Couple of tips:
-try it quickly as the momentum may help and it will trigger the right muscles even if it is cheating.
-rest your toes on the floor (assuming you can touch the floor ok) to give yourself a bit of a boost. Again, it's cheating but will trigger the right muscles.
-dead hangs - start at the height you're trying to go for ie chin by the bar and just hold that position until you cry for your mummy.

Using these techniques, I helped a friend go from zero to 15 pull ups. And she's in her 50s.

15 for a 50 yr old woman is pretty damn impressive!

I will try those techniques, as i am quite tall i have to lift my feet quite a long way in order to hang and it felt like cheating if i didnt do that. Plus I have been doing some exercise since i last tried it so i might have more of a chance now I am 5kg lighter and have a bit more muscle!

Doing the eccentric will develop the muscles too. use assistance to get you into the top poisition and slowly lower your self through the full ROM.

I did some research a while ago and settled on one that expands out on a screw thread into two cups either side of the top of a doorframe. The cups screw on, and yes, you've put six small screw holes in your doorway, but these could be very easily filled, sanded and painted in the future, and upside is that the bar itself is completely secure. This was the attraction for me - lots of the temporary ones can fall off or pull your architrave off over the door (causing a lot more damage than some screw holes). The downside is that most doorframes aren't high enough for the average person to hang with their legs straight - you have to do chin ups with your legs bent. You also can't lift yourself up too high above the bar because of the doorframe and/or ceiling. I'm really happy with it though. We now also have a solidly wall mounted one with lots of different grips in the gym, which is fantastic, but I still use the doorframe one regularly - it's ten years old now and as good as new.

The one I have isn't available any more, but it's similar to this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00AFCMK1U

This. Had mine about 10 years and it's never done any damage. I've got some thick elastic resistance bands that I've looped round then hook a knee into to take some of the load off as I was crap at pull-ups.

Yeah, it impressed me. She ended up getting a fingerboard installed above her kitchen door to do pull ups while cooking!!

Cheat just to train the muscles.

Climbing is basically loads of cheating pull ups. wink

I have a powerbar as mentioned above, and whilst it doesn't damage anything (on the door) and is secure, due to the fact it's a straight bar it can lead to ligament problems. I get pretty bad pain on the inside of my elbow on my right arm when doing underhand pull-ups.

I am going to weld on some short bars at 90 degrees to the main bar to give a neutral grip. If I was buying again I would get one with a neutral grip.

The powerbar is also wide, and only fits in one doorway in my house.

What a great and low priced offering for your son's birthday.

Mine wanted, and got, thanks to ex wife, a £600 gaming PC.

Can we swap hehe

Hi all

Just to close out this original thread for any future reference...I eventually went for the originally posted Adidas bar. It seems quite sturdy & fits our doors well. the 15 year old likes it …. but we'll see how much it actually gets used !!

I'll post back in a few months time with an update if I remember !

Ah, this is what the powerbar has done to my arm. Any tips for recovery? Hurts even when washing my face!!
